The patronal feast of Martignano, in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
The Saint Pantaleon Patronal Feast is the most important event of the year for Martignano, a tiny municipality in the Grecìa Salentina area, in the province of Lecce. Every July 26th and 27th, the entire village gathers around its protector in a celebration that blends religious devotion with popular festivities, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across Salento, particularly from nearby Nardò.
Saint Pantaleon was a physician from Nicomedia, martyred in the early 4th century during Roman persecutions and remembered by tradition as a healer and protector of the sick. In Martignano, the devotion is tied to a precious blood relic, which arrived in 1763 from the diocese of Ravello and is kept in a glass vial set within a reliquary. The community attributes to the saint the protection against malaria and the village's salvation from a devastating hurricane in 1718.
On July 26th, the eve of the feast, the papier-mâché statue of the saint is carried in procession through the village streets, literally covered in gold and banknotes that the faithful pin to the mantle as a votive offering. The evening concludes with fireworks. On July 27th, the liturgical day, masses are held continuously from dawn to welcome the countless pilgrims; after a brief morning outing of the statue, a solemn mass is celebrated with a panegyric and the traditional kissing of the relic.
Alongside the religious program, a dedicated festival committee manages the secular events: luminarie (light displays) illuminate the main streets and Piazza della Repubblica, while in the evening, fine music resonates at the foot of the bandstand with brass band concerts hosted on the illuminated stage. The highly anticipated evening fireworks mark both days.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by Devoziuna, a cultural series curated by the Parco Palmieri cooperative, featuring performances in Griko, guided tours of the village's sacred sites—the wells of Saint Pantaleon, Palazzo Palmieri, the frescoed chapel—and discussions on popular devotion. Martignano is indeed one of the villages of Grecìa Salentina, the area of Puglia where Griko, an ancient language of Greek origin, is preserved: an identity-rich context that makes the Saint Pantaleon feast an authentic experience of the deepest Salento.
In 2026, the Saint Pantaleon Patronal Feast returns to Martignano on July 26th and 27th, in accordance with the fixed liturgical date of the patron saint. The traditional format is confirmed: procession of the papier-mâché statue, masses for pilgrims, kissing of the relic, illuminations, brass band concerts, and evening fireworks in the heart of Grecìa Salentina.
