The patronal feast of Sternatia, in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
Every year on August 22nd, the small village of Sternatia, in the province of Lecce, gathers around its patron saint for the Saint George of Cappadocia Festival. It is the most anticipated event of the year for this community in Grecìa Salentina, an enclave in Salento where the Griko language—an ancient dialect of Greek origin—is still spoken today. For a few days, the town is transformed: traditional illuminations (known locally as parature or parazioni) light up every alley and square, while popular devotion and festive celebrations blend into one grand event.
Saint George has been the primary patron of Sternatia since August 1843. Tradition tells that when a violent storm threatened the village, the inhabitants carried the statue of the saint toward the dark clouds; the sky suddenly cleared, giving way to the sun. Since that day, Saint George has been considered the protector of the community, and the dragon he defeats with his lance still appears on the town's coat of arms. The late-August festival was established to express gratitude and keep the memory of this miracle alive.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. The statue of Saint George is carried on the shoulders of the faithful amidst prayers and songs, accompanied by a brass band. Liturgical celebrations in the parish church open the day before the village lights up with colors for the secular festivities.
In the evening, the square fills with music: live concerts, folk groups, and the infectious rhythm of pizzica salentina keep residents and visitors dancing until late. The highlight is the pyromusical show: in recent years, the community has presented the evocative “Saint George and the Calmed Storm” re-enactment, which commemorates the 1843 miracle by combining traditional pyrotechnics with light shows, lasers, and videomapping.
As with any village festival in Salento, gastronomy takes center stage. Stalls offer local specialties, from pittule to friselle, as well as traditional sweets and local wines. Rides for children complete the festive atmosphere that envelops the entire village.
Experiencing the Saint George Festival is also a perfect opportunity to discover Sternatia, one of the nine municipalities of Grecìa Salentina. The 14th-century Porta Filia, an 18th-century underground olive mill carved into the rock, and the noble Palazzo Granafei with its frescoes and hanging gardens, tell the story of a small but historically rich town nestled in the heart of the Salento peninsula.
The Saint George of Cappadocia Festival 2026 will take place in Sternatia (LE) on August 22nd, confirming the annual appointment with the village's patron saint. The town in Grecìa Salentina will renew its devotion to the saint who, according to tradition, calmed the storm in 1843, saving the community.
The structure of the festival follows that of historical editions: liturgical celebrations in the morning, a solemn procession through the streets of the center with a brass band, and in the evening, folk music, pizzica, and the pyromusical show with fireworks. Illuminations and food stalls featuring Salento specialties complete the festivities.
The Saint George of Cappadocia Festival is celebrated in Sternatia on August 22, 2026. The detailed program for the 2026 edition (celebration times, musical guests, and shows) will be announced by the Saint George Martyr Parish and the Municipality of Sternatia in the weeks preceding the festival.
The traditional structure of the day includes:
In recent editions, the most evocative moment is the re-enactment «Saint George and the Calmed Storm», which commemorates the 1843 miracle with pyrotechnic effects, light shows, and videomapping.
Sternatia is located in Salento, in the province of Lecce, about 25 km from the regional capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 road and the provincial roads of Grecìa Salentina. The main railway station is Lecce, which is connected to other Salento towns by the Ferrovie del Sud Est network. The nearest airport is Brindisi.
The patronal feast is celebrated every year on August 22nd in the historic center of Sternatia.
Participation in the festivities is free. Food stalls and amusement rides require payment.
The village is small, so it is best to park outside the center and walk to the areas where the procession and shows take place. For updated schedules, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Saint George Martyr Parish and the Municipality of Sternatia.
