Three days of faith, votive bonfires, and folk traditions in Marettimo and the Egadi Islands
The Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most deeply rooted and characteristic celebrations of the Egadi Islands, located in the municipality of Favignana, in the province of Trapani (Sicily). It takes place every year around March 19th, the day dedicated to the saint, and involves the three islands of the archipelago: Favignana, Levanzo, and especially Marettimo, the most remote island, where Saint Joseph is the patron saint and protector of workers and seafaring families.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the "Duminara", the great bonfire on the eve of the feast: three piles of brushwood are lit in the square, representing the Holy FamilyโJesus, Joseph, and Mary. Historically, these bonfires were fueled with timber from old fishing boats, symbolizing the profound bond between the sea and the island community. The flames lighting up the night mark the beginning of the festivities and draw both locals and visitors to the squares.
In the days leading up to the festival, the island's homes fill with the scent of traditional sweets, including the characteristic pignolo. Families set up votive altars in their homes with the saint's effigy, opening their doors to fellow islanders who wish to admire them. They prepare panuzzi, special blessed loaves: according to local tradition, if thrown into the water by sailors in danger, they have the power to calm a stormy sea. Among the most touching rites are the "Alloggiate", a re-enactment of the Holy Family's search for shelter, and the "Ammitata dei Santi", a lunch offered in the square to those representing Jesus, Joseph, and Mary.
On the day of the festival, a solemn procession winds through the village streets: the statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Francis of Paola, protector of seafarers, are carried on shoulders accompanied by a brass band, amidst the devoted participation of the community. The distribution of the "panuzzi", along with shows and entertainment, completes the festivities in honor of the saint.
The Saint Joseph Festival is considered a mirror of the Egadi soul: an intangible heritage that weaves together faith, memory, and belonging, passed down from generation to generation. In Marettimo, the organization is now managed by the Associazione San Giuseppe Marettimo ETS, which carries on the legacy of the festival committee active for nearly thirty years, with the patronage of the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Trapani and the Municipality of Favignana โ Isole Egadi, in collaboration with the Diocese of Trapani and the Maria SS. delle Grazie Parish.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Festival in Marettimo was held from March 17th to 19th, spread over three days. Religious moments marked the festival: the opening with the brass band and the flag-raising ceremony with authorities, the lighting of the "Duminara" with three piles of brushwood in honor of Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, the "Alloggiate" rite re-enacting the flight into Egypt, the "Ammitata dei Santi" with a lunch in the square offered to the Holy Family, and the solemn procession with the statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Francis of Paola.
Alongside the rites, the rich evening entertainment program featured Radio Time 90, Lello Analfino & T-Orchestar, the comedy duo Toti e Totino, and DJ sets by Alfredo Li Voti and Alberto Anguzza. The event was held under the patronage of the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Trapani and the Municipality of Favignana โ Isole Egadi.
The Egadi Islands can be reached by sea from Trapani via high-speed hydrofoils and ferries operated by Liberty Lines. Favignana and Levanzo are about a 30-minute hydrofoil ride from Trapani; Marettimo, the furthest island, is about an hour away. It is advisable to check schedules in advance, as they are reduced during the winter months.
The festival takes place around March 19th, with celebrations spread over three days (the eve, the saint's day, and the procession).
Admission to all celebrations is free. In the low season, accommodation options on the islands are limited: it is recommended to book your stay in advance and check maritime connection schedules, which are subject to weather conditions.
