The patron saint festival of Cavallino, featuring religious rites, brass bands, and fireworks
The Saint Dominic of Guzman Patronal Feast is the most cherished summer event in Cavallino, a town in the province of Lecce located just a short distance from the Salento capital. Every year, in early August, the town is adorned with lights and sounds to renew its ancient tribute of faith to the preaching saint, who has been the town's patron since the 17th century. These are three days where religious and secular dimensions intertwine, featuring processions, solemn masses, brass band concerts, musical performances in the square, and traditional fireworks.
The cult of Saint Dominic of Guzman was introduced to Cavallino in 1627 by the Marchioness Beatrice Acquaviva d'Aragona, wife of the Marquis Francesco Castromediano, who was deeply devoted to the Spanish-born saint and founder of the Order of Preachers. Since then, the saint has served as the community's primary protector. The statue depicting him is kept for most of the year in the chapel of the Palazzo Ducale of the Castromediano family, one of the town's iconic monuments, and is carried in procession through the village streets only during the festivities.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession, with the statue of the saint carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the festively decorated streets, accompanied by Eucharistic celebrations in Piazza Castromediano, often presided over by ecclesiastical authorities from the Diocese of Lecce. A particularly evocative moment is the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the saint by the mayor, a gesture that renews the community's entrustment to its protector each year.
Alongside the rites, a rich secular program unfolds: brass band concerts by renowned musical ensembles from Southern Italy, evening musical shows in the square, and the spectacular fireworks display that usually concludes the second evening. The festival ends a few days later with the return of the statue to the Palazzo Ducale: on August 8th, a short procession accompanies the simulacrum back to its chapel, where it will remain until the following year.
Part of the Cavallino Summer calendar, the patronal feast is one of the moments when the Salento village best expresses its identity, blending popular tradition, faith, and conviviality. For those visiting Salento in August, the Saint Dominic of Guzman festivities are the ideal opportunity to discover Cavallino, its Palazzo Ducale, and the authentic atmosphere of a village festival that continues, century after century, to unite the entire community.
In 2026, Cavallino once again celebrates its patron saint, Saint Dominic of Guzman, with the traditional three days of festivities from August 3 to 5. The festival is an integral part of the 2026 Cavallino Summer, the event series that brings the town and the district of Castromediano to life from June 25 to September 13 with theater, music, and dance.
The program alternates, as per tradition, between Eucharistic celebrations and the procession of the saint's statue through the village streets, and secular events in Piazza Castromediano. Closing the festivities on the evening of Wednesday, August 5, is the announced musical show of the Ciccio Riccio Tour 2026, the tour by the Salento radio station that brings music and entertainment to the square. As every year, on August 8, the saint's statue will return to the chapel of the Palazzo Ducale.
The detailed calendar of 2026 religious rites and brass band concerts (times and guest bands) will be published by the Municipality and the parish in the weeks preceding the festival. The confirmed details for the 2026 edition are the dates (August 3-5) and the Ciccio Riccio Tour 2026 show on August 5, included in the official Cavallino Summer program.
The festivities are concentrated in Piazza Castromediano and along the streets of the historic center of Cavallino (LE), about 7 km from Lecce, in the heart of Salento.
By car from Lecce, you can reach Cavallino in about ten minutes via the SP1. The reference train station is Lecce, which is connected to the town by suburban buses. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Salento (about 50 km) and Bari-Palese.
Religious events and performances in the square are free of charge.
