The Ferragosto of Merine in honor of the Madonna Beddhra
In the heart of the Salento summer, the village of Merine, in the municipality of Lizzanello (Province of Lecce, Puglia), spends two days entirely dedicated to its patron saint: the Madonna Assunta in Cielo, whom the locals affectionately call the "Madonna Beddhra". The Patronal Feast of the Madonna Assunta is celebrated every year on August 14th and 15th, aligning the peak of local devotion with the Ferragosto holiday, when this small Salento town fills with residents, returning emigrants, and visitors.
Merine has been tied for centuries to the veneration of the Virgin Assunta, the community's protector. The festival is not merely a local fair, but the most authentic expression of the town's identity: an event that unites generations around the Marian statue kept in the Rettoria della Madonna delle Grazie. The so-called "Sagra te lu Ranu" (Wheat Festival) held in July is traditionally considered a prelude to this August celebration: the symbolism of wheat, linked in Christian tradition to the figure of Mary, accompanies the anticipation of the Assumption.
The core of the festival is liturgical. On August 14th, celebrations open with an evening Holy Mass, followed by one of the most characteristic and poignant moments: the symbolic handing over of the town keys to the patron saint by the Mayor of Lizzanello, a gesture through which the community entrusts its protection to the Madonna. Immediately after, the procession winds through the streets of Merine, with the statue of the Virgin carried past decorated houses, accompanied by the hymns and prayers of the faithful. Among the most intense moments is the singing of the hymn "Bella Madre" by the parish choirs. On August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, the community gathers for the solemn Eucharist at the rectory.
Beyond the religious dimension, the festival preserves all the elements of traditional Salento celebrations. The streets are adorned with typical luminarie, the grand architectural light displays that transform the town into a stage. Brass bands accompany the days with marching music and concerts in the square, following a deeply rooted custom in Southern Italy. The festival culminates in the classic midnight fireworks display, which lights up the sky over Merine and brings the festivities to a spectacular close.
Along with other patronal festivals in the Lizzanello area, the Merine celebration is one of the highlights that define the summer in the Salento region of Lecce. For those visiting Puglia during Ferragosto, it is an authentic opportunity to experience firsthand the popular religiosity and traditions of a small community that, for generations, has proudly upheld its acts of devotion.
The Patronal Feast of the Madonna Assunta in Merine, a village in the municipality of Lizzanello (Province of Lecce), returns on August 14th and 15th, 2026. The date, set on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, coincides as always with Ferragosto.
The edition will follow the established structure: liturgical celebrations at the Rettoria della Madonna delle Grazie, the procession of the Virgin's statue through the village streets, light displays, brass band concerts, and a midnight fireworks show. The official 2026 program, including mass times, the procession route, and the names of the brass bands, will be released by the committee in the days preceding the festival.
