About San Brizio

Every late July, Calimera—a small town in the Grecìa Salentina area of the Lecce province—comes to a standstill to pay homage to San Brizio, its patron saint. Between July 28 and 30, the town lights up with artistic illuminations, filling the streets with brass band concerts, solemn processions, pyromusical fireworks, and traditional Salento folk music. The highlight is July 29, when the statue and relic of the Saint are carried through the town center to commemorate the Translation of the Relic. A celebration that weaves together devotion, tradition, and local festivities.

The most heartfelt festival in Calimera

The San Brizio Patronal Festival is the most important event of the year for Calimera, a town of just over seven thousand residents in the heart of Grecìa Salentina, in the province of Lecce (Puglia). Every year, in the final days of July, the entire town gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that blends religious rites, performances, and community gatherings in the square.

Who was San Brizio

San Brizio (Brictius of Tours) was a disciple and successor of Saint Martin to the episcopal see of Tours, France. The devotion of the people of Calimera is rooted in a local legend: a Roman soldier named Cordulo, who survived a shipwreck after invoking the Saint's help, reportedly donated his assets to Calimera as a sign of gratitude, forever linking the town to its protector. The July 29 anniversary commemorates the Translation of the Relic, which arrived in Calimera in 1880. The festival falls during the cabbage harvest, which is why it is also known in the local dialect as the festival of "San Brizio of the cabbages".

How it unfolds

The festivities open with the novena, leading up to the main days of July 28, 29, and 30. The town is decorated with spectacular artistic illuminations, while the squares host traditional brass band concerts and live music in the evenings.

  • July 28 — Eve of the festival: celebratory fireworks, religious rites, and the lighting of the illuminations.
  • July 29 — Patron saint's day: the solemn procession with the statue and relic of San Brizio travels through the town center, accompanied by the faithful and civil and military authorities.
  • July 30 — The festival concludes with folk music and the pizzica salentina.

Tradition and spectacle

True to Salento tradition, the festivities are crowned by a grand fireworks display that accompanies the Saint's return to the church, a moment of deep collective emotion. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Calimera Festival Committee in collaboration with the municipal administration and the parish, attracts devotees, curious onlookers, and visitors from all over Salento every year.
