The patronal feast of Salento in honor of Saint Donatus, bishop and martyr
In the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce, the town of San Donato di Lecce owes its name to its patron and protector: Saint Donatus of Arezzo, a 4th-century bishop and martyr who, according to tradition, died on August 7, 362 AD, during the persecutions of Emperor Julian the Apostate. Every summer, the community pays tribute to him with one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in lower Salento, attracting devotees and visitors from neighboring towns.
The saint is honored at three distinct times of the year. The heart of the festivities falls on August 6 and 7, with the solemnity of the patron; these are followed by the octave on August 14 and the patronage on August 28. These two dates are not coincidental: August 14 commemorates an episode from 1779, while August 28 recalls the 1909 cyclone from which, according to popular devotion, the town was miraculously spared after the saint's statue was carried in procession.
The most solemn moment is the procession of the silver statue of Saint Donatus, carried on the shoulders of devotees through the streets of the historic center and accompanied by hymns, prayers, and a brass band. During the festival days, the town is dressed in festive attire with spectacular illuminations that light up squares and streets, while the traditional bandstand hosts brass band concerts. There is no shortage of live music and Salento folklore performances, which have enlivened Piazza Garibaldi and the town center over the years.
The religious and musical dimension is joined by a commercial one: on August 7, the large regional Expo San Donato fair takes place. It is one of the most popular in the area, featuring stalls and stands offering everything from tools to jewelry, toys, and local products, in a festive atmosphere that blends the sacred and the profane in the best Apulian tradition.
The San Donato Festival represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is the very identity of San Donato di Lecce and one of the highlights of the Salento summer, capable of weaving together faith, music, illuminations, and conviviality in the heart of Puglia.
The 2026 San Donato Festival takes place in San Donato di Lecce, in Salento, on the traditional days of August 6 and 7, with the anniversaries of the octave (August 14) and the patronage (August 28). As every year, the town prepares to welcome devotees and visitors with the solemn procession of the patron's silver statue, the illuminations lighting up the historic center, brass band concerts in the bandstand, and the final fireworks display. On August 7, the large regional Expo San Donato fair also returns.
The detailed civil program for the 2026 edition, including musical performances and schedules, will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival by the San Donato di Lecce Patronal Feast Committee.
