A patronal feast in the heart of Salento

The Saints Joachim and Anne Festival is the patronal feast of the Town of Vernole, a village in the Salento area of the Province of Lecce, in Apulia. Every year, on July 25th and 26th, the historic center is transformed: the main streets are adorned with traditional illuminations, music fills the squares, and the community gathers around its patron saints in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion and popular joy.

Saint Anne and Saint Joachim are venerated as the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. Their feast is particularly dear to expectant mothers: for generations, hundreds of mothers-to-be have visited the church to seek the intercession of Saint Anne for a peaceful birth, a gesture of faith passed down through time. It is also an occasion that draws many former residents back to Vernole, who choose this moment to return and reconnect with their roots and sense of belonging.

The religious program

The festivities are preceded by novenas that, starting from mid-July, guide the community each evening toward the solemnity. On July 25th, the eve of the feast, morning masses are held, followed in the evening by the solemn procession through the town streets with the statues of the patron saints. On July 26th, celebrations continue with morning and evening masses, the spiritual heart of the event.

Civil celebrations

As evening falls, the streets of Vernole come alive with music and lights: brass band concerts alternate with traditional Salento sounds, while food stalls offer local specialties. The festivities conclude in style with the highly anticipated fireworks display, a moment that illuminates the Salento sky and gathers families and visitors alike, all looking upward in wonder.
