Salento's pizzica in the square, at the heart of the Itinerant Festival
Every summer, Salento transforms into a vast open-air dance floor, and Sogliano Cavour, a small town in the province of Lecce, serves as one of the stages for Europe's largest folk music festival. This is a stop for La Notte della Taranta, the traveling event that traverses Salento's towns every year, bringing pizzica to the squares before the famous final Concertone in Melpignano.
Founded in 1998 and organized by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation, the festival is much more than a series of concerts: it is a collective ritual that brings pizzica pizzica—the ancient dance linked to the phenomenon of tarantism—back to life. For over two weeks, between late July and August, the event brings music, dance, and cultural reflection to the squares of about twenty Salento municipalities. The Sogliano Cavour stage is held early in the circuit, among the festival's first evenings.
In Piazza Diaz, the heart of the town, historic Salento music groups, singer-songwriters, and projects reinterpreting traditional repertoires take the stage. The hypnotic sound of tambourines, accordions, battente guitars, and dialect vocals accompany an audience dancing the pizzica until late at night. Before the concerts, the evening often hosts a Taranta Talk, a meeting with scholars, journalists, and musicians who delve into the roots and contemporary relevance of Salento's folk culture.
The strength of La Notte della Taranta lies in its nature as a people's festival: residents, young people, and visitors from all over Italy and abroad gather in the same square, united by the same rhythm. In Sogliano Cavour, as in the other towns on the circuit, the evening is free and open to all, turning the town center into a natural stage for a living tradition.
Experiencing La Notte della Taranta in Sogliano Cavour means immersing yourself in a territory with a powerful identity, defined by ancient olive trees, historic centers built in Lecce stone, and courtyards and squares that become theaters for pizzica in the summer. It is an unmissable, free event for those who want to discover the most authentic soul of Puglia and Salento, just a few kilometers from Lecce and the lower Salento area.
The Sogliano Cavour stage is confirmed for Tuesday, August 4, 2026, as part of the itinerant La Notte della Taranta festival, now in its 29th edition. The evening is part of the circuit that travels through Salento's towns in the weeks leading up to the grand Concertone of Melpignano, scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, and directed this year by Maestro Concertatore Ermal Meta.
As per tradition, the evening in Sogliano Cavour will bring pizzica pizzica and Salento folk music to the square, with concerts and a potential Taranta Talk. Admission will be free.
The detailed program for the Sogliano Cavour stage (guest artists, groups, potential Taranta Talk, and times) will be announced by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event, as is the case every year for the individual evenings of the itinerant festival.
The evening of August 4, 2026, is part of the itinerant circuit that precedes the final Concertone in Melpignano on August 22, directed by Maestro Concertatore Ermal Meta.
Performances are held in the center of Sogliano Cavour, in the province of Lecce, traditionally in Piazza Diaz. Admission is free.
By car: Sogliano Cavour can be reached via the provincial roads connecting Lecce to lower Salento (about 20 km from Lecce). By train: the Ferrovie del Sud Est line connects Lecce to the towns of central Salento. Nearest airport: Brindisi-Papola Casale.
Free admission. Events generally begin late in the evening, from 8:30 PM onwards, and continue until late at night. Arriving early is recommended to secure a spot in the square.
Wear comfortable shoes for dancing, bring water, and dress lightly. During the festival, parking in the center is limited; it is advisable to leave your car in areas outside the town center.
