The two patron saints of Martano in the heart of the Salento summer
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The patronal feast of Martano, a small town in the Grecìa Salentina area in the province of Lecce, is one of the most heartfelt in lower Salento. The community celebrates two patron saints: Saint Dominic of Guzmán, founder of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans), venerated on August 8th, and the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption, whose devotion culminates during the week of Ferragosto, on August 14th and 15th. A double celebration that turns the entire central week of August into a long period of festivities.
The most recognizable sign of the festival is the artistic illuminations that dress the historic center and the town squares: true cathedrals of light that, as in all Salento patronal feasts, attract visitors from all over Puglia. The streets fill with market stalls selling sweets, toys, and local products, while fairground rides animate the spaces dedicated to families and children.
The spiritual heart of the celebrations is the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, where solemn masses and moments of devotion take place. The highlight is the procession of the statues of the Madonna of the Assumption and Saint Dominic along the decorated streets of the village, accompanied by marching bands, hymns, and the prayers of the faithful.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich program of popular events: evening concerts, folk shows, and music nights in the square, often featuring the traditions of pizzica and Salento folk music. There is no shortage of food stands serving typical Salento dishes and local flavors. The festivities conclude with a fireworks display, the most anticipated and scenic moment of the entire week.
Experiencing the patronal feast of Martano also means discovering one of the most authentic villages in Salento: the ideal capital of Grecìa Salentina, the area where Griko, the ancient language of Greek origin, is still preserved. Between underground oil mills, historic courtyards, and churches, the town offers visitors a setting where popular faith, cultural identity, and hospitality merge into the typical atmosphere of the Salento summer.
The Martano Patronal Feast Committee has not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 edition. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to renew the appointment with artistic illuminations in the historic center, solemn processions from the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, evening concerts, food stands, and the concluding fireworks. The detailed program, including dates and musical guests, will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Martano is located about 20 km southeast of Lecce, in the heart of Grecìa Salentina. By car, it can be reached via the provincial roads connecting Lecce to Maglie and Otranto. The nearest train station with regional connections is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airport is Brindisi-Salento.
The festivities are traditionally concentrated in the week of Ferragosto, with August 8th dedicated to Saint Dominic of Guzmán and August 14th-15th to the Madonna of the Assumption.
Access to events in the square, the illuminations, and the processions is free of charge.
Book your accommodation in advance: during the week of Ferragosto, Salento is particularly crowded. Arrive early to witness the procession and to find a spot during the evening concerts and fireworks.
