In the heart of Salento, just a few kilometers from Lecce, the town of Lizzanello hosts its most important annual event: the feast dedicated to Saint Lawrence the Martyr, the community's patron saint, celebrated on August 10th with a vigil on the 9th. It is an event that combines deep religious devotion with the most authentic expressions of Apulian folk tradition, drawing not only locals but also many emigrants returning home for the summer.
Preparations begin with a novena, nine days of evening services in the Mother Church that culminate on the eve of the feast. The spiritual heart of the celebration is the statue of Saint Lawrence, an 18th-century papier-mรขchรฉ masterpiece attributed to the artisan Malecore (1700), which is solemnly placed at the altar and later carried in procession among the faithful, confraternities, and liturgical chants. On the evening of August 9th, the statue travels through the main streets of the historic center before returning to the parish church.
The most symbolic ritual takes place on the morning of August 10th in Piazza San Lorenzo: in front of the stone monument of the Saint, the traditional "Changing of the Flags" is performed, an ancient gesture that renews the bond between the community and its protector. This is accompanied by the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the patron saint by the mayor, signifying the entrustment of Lizzanello to Saint Lawrence. These moments capture the deep identity of this village in the Province of Lecce.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast bursts into life with its secular and popular side. Streets and squares light up with artistic illuminations, while brass band concerts featuring renowned Salento and Apulian ensembles animate the town throughout the two days. There is no shortage of typical Salento gastronomy, with stalls offering local products, and the unmissable fireworks display that closes the evenings, lighting up the sky over Lizzanello.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Lawrence is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when the entire Lizzanello community reunites, between the sacred and the profane, in one of the most characteristic celebrations of the Salento summer. In Lizzanello, devotion to Saint Lawrence is also renewed in winter with the Feast of the Patronage on January 19th, featuring the lighting of the characteristic fรฒcara bonfire in memory of a survived earthquake, a testament to an ancient and unbroken bond between the town and its saint. Visitors to Puglia in August will find here an authentic opportunity to experience the tradition, faith, and hospitality of the people of Salento.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Lizzanello (LE), centered around the Mother Church of Saint Lawrence and Piazza San Lorenzo, in the heart of Salento.
By car: Lizzanello is about 8 km southeast of Lecce, accessible via provincial roads connecting the regional capital to Cavallino and Vernole. By train: Lecce station, then local bus connections to Lizzanello. Nearest airport: Brindisi-Salento.
Traditionally August 9th (vigil) and 10th (solemnity), preceded by the novena starting in the first days of the month.
All events are free and open to the public.
We recommend checking the updated program on the official channels of the Municipality of Lizzanello and the parish. In the height of summer, it is advisable to book accommodation in the Lecce area well in advance.
