Celebrating the iconic Salento pastry in Surano
The Lecce Pasticciotto Festival is one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of the summer in Lower Salento. Every year, at the end of July, the small village of Surano โ located in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia โ dedicates an entire evening to the pastry that best embodies the Salento identity: the pasticciotto, a shortcrust pastry shell filled with custard, served strictly warm.
The heart of the festival is Piazza SS. Martiri d'Otranto, where master pastry chefs work in full view, kneading, filling, and baking thousands of pasticciotti for the crowd. The aroma of fresh pastry and custard fills the historic center as the treats are distributed for free to visitors. Alongside the star of the show, you will find other traditional Salento specialties, from rustici and pucce to local wines.
The evening is not just about flavors: the program includes concerts of traditional Salento folk music, with pizzica rhythms setting the pace for the night in the square. Local bands and artists accompany the festivities until late, turning the tasting into a moment of shared community and identity.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Surano, with co-financing from the Puglia Region and the patronage of the Province of Lecce. Created to promote the iconic product of Lecce's pastry tradition and to enliven the town's summer, the festival has grown year after year, becoming a major draw for both residents and tourists across Salento.
A delicious and authentic stop for those who want to discover the true Salento, far from the crowded tourist routes, in a village that becomes the capital of the pasticciotto for one night.
The 2026 edition of the Lecce Pasticciotto Festival is scheduled in Surano on July 28, 2026, in Piazza SS. Martiri d'Otranto. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Surano, will feature the formula that made it famous: pasticciotti baked live and distributed for free, traditional Salento products, and folk music. The full program, including the evening's artists, will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
Surano is located in Lower Salento, in the Province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS 275 (MaglieโSanta Maria di Leuca), taking the exit for Surano. The nearest train station is in Maglie, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line, from where you can continue by car or local bus. The reference airport is Brindisi.
The event takes place in the evening, with the free distribution of pasticciotti typically starting at 8:30 PM. Admission is free.
Arrive early to watch the pastry chefs at work and avoid queues for the distribution. The village is small: it is advisable to park in areas outside the historic center and continue on foot.
