The king of Salento street food celebrated in the historic center of Surano
The Rustico Leccese Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Surano, a small town in the lower Salento hinterland in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. Created to celebrate one of the most iconic products of Salento's gastronomy, the festival transforms the squares and alleys of the historic center for one night into a large open-air kitchen, where the scent of freshly baked puff pastry accompanies an evening of taste, music, and conviviality.
The rustico leccese is a disc of flaky, golden puff pastry filled with tomato, mozzarella, and béchamel: a classic of Salento's rosticceria, found in every bar and bakery in the area and loved by locals and visitors alike. During the festival, the rustico is offered at food stalls alongside other local traditional specialties, creating a culinary journey that tells the story of the popular soul of Salento's cuisine.
The tasting is accompanied by festivities: the pizzica salentina, the traditional dance and music of Salento, marks the evening with its engaging rhythms, drawing families, young people, and tourists to the square. The atmosphere is that typical of Puglian village festivals—simple and genuine—where gastronomy becomes an opportunity for meeting and celebrating local identity.
Organized by the Salento Senza Confini association with the patronage of the Municipality of Surano, the festival is part of the rich calendar of summer events in Salento and is traditionally held at the end of July, often in close proximity to the Pasticciotto Festival, which celebrates the famous Leccese pastry. Surano, with its cozy historic center and the square dedicated to the Santi Martiri d'Otranto, offers the ideal setting for a tasty evening just a few kilometers from the beaches of the Adriatic and Ionian coasts.
The 2026 Rustico Leccese Festival will be held in Surano (province of Lecce) on July 29, in Piazza Santi Martiri d'Otranto and the alleys of the historic center. The event, organized by the Salento Senza Confini association, confirms the well-established formula dedicated to the rustico leccese and the gastronomic traditions of Salento, with tastings and folk music. The times and detailed musical program will be announced by the organization closer to the event.
Surano can be reached by car via the SS275 (exit for Miggiano/Surano) or the provincial road network of lower Salento; the nearest airports are Brindisi and Lecce (the main train station in the area), from where you can continue by car towards the southern hinterland.
The festival is held in Piazza Santi Martiri d'Otranto and the alleys of the historic center of Surano.
Access to the event is free; tastings are paid for at the food stalls. It is recommended to check the updated dates and program on the organization's social media channels before setting off.
