The Ortolana bruschetta and Salento pizzica festival in Vitigliano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ortolana Bruschetta Festival is a beloved summer event in Vitigliano, a tiny hamlet in the municipality of Santa Cesarea Terme, in the Province of Lecce. Established in the early 2000s, the festival has now surpassed twenty editions and remains one of the most anticipated events in the local calendar of the lower Salento, bringing to life the villages overlooking the Adriatic Sea between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca during the summer.
Toasted bread is just the starting point. The "Ortolana" version celebrates the Salento vegetable garden: fresh tomatoes, fried peppers, grilled vegetables, and a generous drizzle of local extra virgin olive oil create a simple, authentic bite that tells the story of the region's peasant cuisine. Alongside the bruschetta, the stalls offer other typical Salento specialties and local wines, in a culinary journey designed to introduce visitors to the authentic products of the Capo di Leuca.
The true beating heart of the evening is the music. On the stage in Piazzetta degli Angeli, groups specializing in Salento pizzica and folk music take turns performing, with tambourines, Mediterranean rhythms, and group dances that involve the audience of all ages until late at night. It is the perfect opportunity to experience one of the most iconic popular traditions of Salento: the taranta and dancing under the stars.
The festival maintains the intimate and convivial atmosphere of a village fair: you eat outdoors, sit at shared tables, and dance in the square. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Santa Cesarea Terme and in collaboration with the local thermal baths, and it is designed to highlight the agricultural roots and the sense of belonging of Vitigliano. For those spending their holidays on the Salento coast, it is a must-visit stop to savor the true popular soul of the territory.
At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Ortolana Bruschetta Festival in Vitigliano. Based on the tradition of recent years, the event usually takes place on an evening in July at Piazzetta degli Angeli, with tastings of Ortolana bruschetta, typical Salento products, and local wines, accompanied by folk music and pizzica. We will update this page as soon as official information is released.
Vitigliano is a hamlet of Santa Cesarea Terme, in the Province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached from the Adriatic coastal road or the inland roads connecting Poggiardo and Otranto; the event takes place in the historic center of the village, at Piazzetta degli Angeli (Largo Addolorata). Nearest airport: Brindisi. Main railway station: Lecce, followed by bus connections to lower Salento.
Admission to the festival is free. Bruschetta and other specialties can be purchased at the stalls with affordable menus. It is recommended to arrive in the evening when tastings and live music begin.
As it is a village festival, seating is limited: it is best to arrive early. Salento summers mean warm but breezy evenings on the coast; wear comfortable clothing for dancing the pizzica.
