Frascatelli, the peasant dish of the highest Molise
In the highest Molise region, in the province of Isernia, Sant'Angelo del Pesco preserves a simple yet flavorful peasant cuisine. On August 13th, the village pays homage to it with the Sagra della Polenta, dedicated to frascatelli: a typical dish made from corn polenta, traditionally cooked in salted water and enriched with beans, pork rind, and a pinch of chili pepper.
The sagra was established in 2016 with the aim of reviving the village's lost traditions, celebrating a dish tied to the memories of local families. It takes place in the piazza, where stalls serve steaming frascatelli in an evening of celebration and conviviality, enlivened by music and community gatherings.
The Sagra della Polenta ideally kicks off the most intense period of summer in Sant'Angelo del Pesco, taking place a few days before the feast of San Rocco on August 16th. It's an opportunity to discover an authentic and little-known corner of Molise, near the border with Abruzzo, and to savor the genuine flavors of mountain cuisine.
The Sagra della Polenta returns on August 13, 2026, in Sant'Angelo del Pesco (IS). The stars will again be the frascatelli โ corn polenta with beans and pork rind โ served at the stalls in the piazza, for an evening of celebration and conviviality. The detailed program of the event is usually announced in the weeks leading up to it.
