In Montenero Val Cocchiara, in Alto Molise in the province of Isernia, lies the Pantano: a marshy plateau where, amidst spring waters and pastures, the Pentro horse, an ancient native equine breed from Molise, lives wild. It is to these animals, symbols of the village, that the village dedicates the Rodeo Pentro in August.
A unique event
The rodeo involves the taming of wild foals and bareback riding competitions, reminiscent of American West competitions. It is a unique event of its kind in the entire region, capable of attracting thousands of visitors on the day of the competition. Organized with the patronage of the Region of Molise and the Province of Isernia, the Rodeo Pentro combines spectacle, pastoral tradition, and the valorization of a precious breed.
Between mountains and flavors
The event is accompanied by the tasting of local products, which completes a day immersed in the landscape of Alto Molise, among the mountains and pastures that frame the Pantano.
Rodeo Pentro — edition 2026
The Rodeo Pentro returns in August to Montenero Val Cocchiara, traditionally in the first half of the month, in the Pantano area. The event features the taming of wild foals of the Pentro breed and bareback riding competitions, in the style of American rodeo, in front of thousands of spectators. The day is enhanced by the tasting of typical Alto Molise products. The event is held under the patronage of the Region of Molise and the Province of Isernia.

How to get there
Montenero Val Cocchiara can be reached by car from Alto Volturno, towards the mountains of Alto Molise. The rodeo takes place in the Pantano area, the plateau where the Pentro horses live.
