The Festa del Mare di Villacanale is a charming fish festival that, for over thirty years, has brought the flavors of the sea to a completely unexpected setting: the mountains of Alto Molise. Villacanale is a hamlet of Agnone, in the province of Isernia, and every August 14th, for the Ferragosto holiday, its square comes alive with the "sagra del pesce" (fish festival), featuring tastings of fish products, music, and dancing.
A community tradition
The event, founded in 1992, is organized by the Associazione Culturale Nuova Villacanale (New Villacanale Cultural Association) in collaboration with the Municipality of Agnone. It is a moment of strong cohesion for the small community, which also attracts returning emigrants and many summer visitors to Molise. To facilitate participation and allow everyone to enjoy the evening, a shuttle service is provided from Agnone.

The Festa del Mare is part of Agnone's rich summer calendar (Agnone Estate) and represents one of the most anticipated events of the Alto Molise Ferragosto. The 2026 edition of the Festa del Mare di Villacanale takes place on August 14th, continuing a Ferragosto tradition that has been running since 1992.
