The squid festival in the Cristo Re district of Civitanova Marche
The Sagra de li Calamà is one of the most cherished summer festivals in Civitanova Marche, a coastal city in the Province of Macerata overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the Marche region. The name, in local dialect, refers to squid: for a few evenings in August, this mollusc becomes the undisputed king of the table, celebrated in all its variations by the coastal culinary tradition.
The event is held in the Cristo Re district, in the Piazzale di Cristo Re (named after Don Eliseo Scorolli), in the area of the Cristo Re Parish. Food stalls generally open from 7:00 PM, transforming the square into a large communal area where families, residents, and tourists gather for dinner under the stars, in a simple and genuine atmosphere typical of Marche village festivals.
The menu revolves around squid, served in several preparations:
In addition to the food, the event features musical performances and evening entertainment, moments dedicated to the local maritime traditions, and activities for children. It is a festival that combines gastronomy with community spirit, showcasing the deep connection between Civitanova Marche and its sea.
The Sagra de li Calamà is organized by the Don Eliseo Scorolli APS Association, in collaboration with the San Pietro-Cristo Re Pastoral Unit and with the patronage of the Municipality of Civitanova Marche. The proceeds support projects of the parish community, giving the festival a charitable value that goes beyond the pleasure of dining.
For those visiting the Marche region in the summer, the Sagra de li Calamà is the ideal opportunity to discover Adriatic seafood cuisine in an authentic and popular setting, far from more commercial tourist formulas. A plate of fried squid, an evening of music, and the hospitality of an entire neighborhood perfectly summarize the spirit of Marche festivals.
The Sagra de li Calamà 2026, now in its 12th edition, will be held in Civitanova Marche from August 8th to 11th, 2026, in the Piazzale di Cristo Re. The traditional format is confirmed: food stalls with fried, stuffed, grilled, and sauced squid, skewers, watermelon, beer, and wine, as well as a menu for children.
The organization, managed by the Don Eliseo Scorolli APS Association, also plans live music, evening shows, and activities for children this year. The complete program of artists and times has not yet been published and will be announced closer to the event.
Four evenings (August 8-11, 2026) with food stalls, live music, and evening shows. The detailed artistic program will be published by the organization in the weeks preceding the event.
Civitanova Marche is easily accessible by car via the A14 motorway (Civitanova Marche-Montegranaro exit) and by train thanks to the Civitanova Marche-Montegranaro station on the Adriatic line. The Cristo Re district is located in the urban area of the city.
Food stalls generally open from 7:00 PM. Admission to the festival area is free; you pay for what you consume at the counter. Proceeds support the charitable purposes of the parish community.
During the peak summer season, it is advisable to book accommodation on the Civitanova Marche Riviera in advance. On crowded evenings, there may be a wait at the stalls: arriving early helps avoid queues.
