About Sagra de li Calamà

Every August, the Cristo Re district of Civitanova Marche transforms into a large outdoor dining area dedicated to squid, the absolute star of Adriatic seafood cuisine. The Sagra de li Calamà offers fried, stuffed, grilled, and sauced squid, as well as squid in pasta dishes, accompanied by skewers, watermelon, beer, and wine, in a popular festive atmosphere with live music and evening shows. Organized by the Don Eliseo Scorolli Association for charitable purposes, it is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the Civitanova summer, in the heart of the Province of Macerata.

The squid festival in Civitanova Marche

The Sagra de li Calamà is one of the most cherished summer festivals in Civitanova Marche, a coastal city in the Province of Macerata overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the Marche region. The name, in local dialect, refers to squid: for a few evenings in August, this mollusc becomes the undisputed king of the table, celebrated in all its variations by the coastal culinary tradition.

Where it takes place

The event is held in the Cristo Re district, in the Piazzale di Cristo Re (named after Don Eliseo Scorolli), in the area of the Cristo Re Parish. Food stalls generally open from 7:00 PM, transforming the square into a large communal area where families, residents, and tourists gather for dinner under the stars, in a simple and genuine atmosphere typical of Marche village festivals.

What to eat

The menu revolves around squid, served in several preparations:

  • Fried squid, crispy and golden, the true signature dish of the festival
  • Stuffed squid and grilled squid
  • Squid in sauce and in seafood pasta dishes
  • Roasted fish skewers, watermelon, beer, and wine
  • A dedicated menu for children, with fries and dessert

Music, shows, and tradition

In addition to the food, the event features musical performances and evening entertainment, moments dedicated to the local maritime traditions, and activities for children. It is a festival that combines gastronomy with community spirit, showcasing the deep connection between Civitanova Marche and its sea.

A festival with charitable purposes

The Sagra de li Calamà is organized by the Don Eliseo Scorolli APS Association, in collaboration with the San Pietro-Cristo Re Pastoral Unit and with the patronage of the Municipality of Civitanova Marche. The proceeds support projects of the parish community, giving the festival a charitable value that goes beyond the pleasure of dining.

Why attend

For those visiting the Marche region in the summer, the Sagra de li Calamà is the ideal opportunity to discover Adriatic seafood cuisine in an authentic and popular setting, far from more commercial tourist formulas. A plate of fried squid, an evening of music, and the hospitality of an entire neighborhood perfectly summarize the spirit of Marche festivals.
