About Il Barattolo

Every second Sunday of the month (excluding July and August), the historic center of Macerata transforms into a large open-air market. Since 1996, Il Barattolo has filled Piazza della Libertà, the loggias, and the arcades with stalls selling small antiques, artistic crafts, collectibles, modern items, hobbyist creations, and typical food and wine products. An event loved by the people of Macerata and by curious shoppers looking for the right bargain, which in December becomes the big Christmas Market with an ice-skating rink.

A tradition spanning thirty years

Active since 1996, Il Barattolo is one of the longest-running and most beloved events in the calendar of Macerata, in the heart of the Marche region. Every second Sunday of the month — with a summer break only in July and August — the historic center of the provincial capital comes alive with stalls, exhibitors, and visitors, transforming into an open-air market where the watchword is to browse, discover, and trade.

What you can find among the stalls

Il Barattolo is not just a simple antique fair: it's a mosaic of merchandise sectors that coexist along the streets of the center. As you stroll, you'll encounter:

  • Small antiques: furniture, prints, silverware, porcelain, and vintage objects;
  • Artistic crafts: handmade creations, jewelry, wood and metal work;
  • Collectibles and modern items: vinyl records, books, retro gaming, and curiosities from the 20th century;
  • Hobbyist items: objects made by private citizens with a hobbyist or creative permit;
  • Typical food and wine products: specialties from the Marche and other Italian regions.

Seven areas in the historic center

The market is spread across seven distinct areas of the center, each with its own atmosphere: Piazza della Libertà, the Loggia dei Mercanti, the Loggiato del Palazzo degli Studi, Piazza Cesare Battisti, the Galleria Scipione, Via De Vico, and Corso della Repubblica. Walking from one area to another is the best way to discover corners of Macerata's main square, amidst historic buildings and arcades, while hunting for a bargain.

The Christmas Market

The highlight of the year arrives in December with the Christmas Market, which in 2026 will celebrate its 31st edition. Over several days, the stalls multiply with gift ideas, vintage clothing and accessories, artisanal objects, and typical products, while an ice-skating rink is set up in Piazza Cesare Battisti, making the atmosphere even more magical for families and children.

Why it's worth going

More than a commercial event, Il Barattolo is a small community celebration that punctuates the Sundays of Macerata and its province. It's an opportunity to combine a walk through the historic center with the pleasure of discovery: a rare book, a piece of furniture to restore, a handmade piece of jewelry, or simply a stroll among the stalls with an aperitif in one of the central cafes. Admission is free and the event is suitable for all ages.

Il Barattolo — edition 2026

The 2026 calendar for Il Barattolo confirms the monthly event in the historic center of Macerata: nine Sundays from January to November plus the big Christmas Market in December. Stalls of antiques, crafts, collectibles, and typical products liven up seven areas of the center, from Piazza della Libertà to the historic arcades, with free admission all day.

For 2026, Il Barattolo renews its appointment on the second Sunday of the month in the historic center of Macerata. The confirmed dates on the official calendar are: January 11, February 8, March 8, April 12, May 24, June 14, September 13, October 11, and November 8, with the usual summer break in July and August.

Every Sunday, the seven areas of the center — Piazza della Libertà, Loggia dei Mercanti, Loggiato del Palazzo degli Studi, Piazza Cesare Battisti, Galleria Scipione, Via De Vico, and Corso della Repubblica — host stalls selling small antiques, artistic crafts, collectibles, modern items, hobbyist creations, and typical food and wine products. The event is outdoors, with free admission, and parking is available for free in the city's car parks.
