The patron saint festival of Civitanova Marche between faith, sea, and great concerts
The Festa di San Marone is the heart of Civitanova's summer and the quintessential identity event for the Municipality of Civitanova Marche, in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region. San Marone, of Syrian origin, is venerated as the city's patron saint and is celebrated on August 18th: a few days of celebrations are concentrated around this date, involving both the seaside area and the historic village of Civitanova Alta, bringing together residents, holidaymakers, and faithful from all over the territory.
The festival has a dual soul. On one hand, deep religious devotion, with solemn masses at the Sanctuary of San Marone, the exhibition of relics, and especially the sea procession: the Saint's arm is embarked and accompanied along the coast by a procession of Civitanova fishing boats, in a rite that culminates with the laying of a wreath and the blessing of the sea in memory of those who lost their lives at sea. On the other hand, the great civil festival, with evening concerts in Piazza XX Settembre, food stalls, disco music, and the traditional midnight fireworks that illuminate the seafront.
Civitanova Alta preserves the oldest rites of the festival, organized by the local Pro Loco (local tourism board). The Cozzata de Santo Maro stands out, an ancient custom that brings the community of the historic center together in the square, alongside events linked to the maritime world such as the Palio dei Pontili and the Sgombro d'Oro, regattas, and convivial moments that tell of the city's fishing vocation.
In recent years, the concert section has grown to become one of the main attractions: tribute bands and great shows in the square liven up the August evenings, transforming Piazza XX Settembre into an open-air stage. Between seafood dinners, children's menus, bouncy castles, and music until late at night, the festival embraces all generations.
Participating in the Festa di San Marone means discovering the authentic soul of Civitanova Marche: a seaside city that, for a few summer days, rediscovers its roots amidst faith, tradition, and fun. It is the ideal opportunity for those visiting the Marche in August to combine beach time, good food, and a popular event with a strong identity.
In 2026, the celebrations for San Marone are concentrated from August 14th to 18th, intertwining the grand civil festival in Piazza XX Settembre with religious celebrations at the Sanctuary of San Marone and in Civitanova Alta. The most beloved events are confirmed: the sea procession with the Saint's relics accompanied by fishing boats, the midnight fireworks, and the Pro Loco events in the historic village, from the Cozzata de Santo Maro to initiatives related to the maritime world.
Detailed schedules for masses and civil events will be published by the Municipality of Civitanova Marche and the Parish of San Marone in the days preceding the festival.
Civitanova Marche is easily reachable by train (Civitanova Marche-Montegranaro station on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line) and by car via the A14 motorway, Civitanova Marche exit. Civil events are concentrated in Piazza XX Settembre and along the seafront, while religious rites take place at the Sanctuary of San Marone and in Civitanova Alta.
The celebrations are held approximately from August 14th to 18th, with the patron saint's day on August 18th.
Concerts in the square and events are free admission. Seafood dinners and food stalls are paid per consumption.
In August, the city is crowded: it is advisable to book accommodation in advance and arrive at the square well in advance for the most anticipated concerts.
