Sagne and beans under the shooting stars in the San Lorenzo district of Vasto
In the heart of the Vasto summer, the San Lorenzo district in Vasto, in the province of Chieti, comes alive for one of the most cherished local festivals: the Sagne e Fasciule Festival. The name, in the local dialect, refers to a simple and hearty dish from the Abruzzo peasant tradition: sagne, wide strips of handmade pasta, served with fasciule, or beans. It is a humble yet iconic dish that tells the story of home cooking and the gastronomic heritage of the village.
The event takes place on the evenings around August 10th, the feast day of Saint Lawrence the Martyr and the night of the shooting stars. This is no coincidence: the festival combines the district's patron saint with the magic of the Perseids, offering open-air dinners under the starry sky. Organized by the San Lorenzo Martire Parish, the festivities are held in the square in front of the church, starting at 8:00 PM.
Over the two evenings, food stalls serve the signature dish, sagne e fasciule, alongside local gastronomic products and homemade desserts prepared according to traditional recipes. For a modest contribution, visitors can taste the flavors of Vasto's cuisine in a lively, communal setting.
Originally a neighborhood party, the Sagne e Fasciule Festival has become a staple of the Vasto summer over the years, attracting both residents and tourists vacationing on the Abruzzo coast. The atmosphere is that of a classic village fair: long outdoor tables, folk music, group dancing, and a strong spirit of community. The event is designed for the whole family, with spaces and activities dedicated to children.
The festival is part of the official summer events calendar of the Municipality of Vasto and represents a moment when the city, overlooking the Adriatic and known for its marina and historic center, rediscovers the roots of its popular cuisine. It is a perfect opportunity to savor the most authentic side of Abruzzo, where recipes are passed down through generations and August evenings are spent together in the square.
The 29th edition of the Sagne e Fasciule Festival is confirmed for August 9 and 10, 2026, starting at 8:00 PM in the square in front of the Church of San Lorenzo Martire in Vasto. As per tradition, the San Lorenzo Martire Parish is organizing the two evenings, dedicated to the signature dish of Vasto cuisine: sagne with beans.
The food stalls will offer sagne e fasciule along with local gastronomic products and homemade dessert specialties, with tastings available for a modest contribution. There will also be live music and an area dedicated to children. The detailed program and the schedule of musical performances for the evening will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
