About Ari Madonna delle Grazie Festival

Every third Sunday of September, the small village of Ari, in the province of Chieti, gathers around the venerated medieval wooden statue of the Madonna delle Grazie. Three days of celebrations, spanning from Saturday to the Monday dedicated to Santa Filomena, combine solemn processions with the warmth of a village fair: music and dancing in the square, the fragrant porchetta and arrosticini market, pilgrims arriving on foot from Giuliano Teatino, and young people in traditional costumes carrying copper basins on their heads. A festival that weaves together faith and Abruzzese identity.

The heart of Ari's festivities

The celebrations in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and Santa Filomena are the most cherished event in Ari, a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants perched on a spur of the Dendalo stream valley, in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every year, on the third Sunday of September, the entire community gathers around the church of the Madonna delle Grazie, which houses the statues of the Virgin and Santa Filomena, to renew a devotion rooted in centuries of history.

The medieval statue of the Madonna

At the center of the celebrations is the venerated medieval wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, carried in procession through the streets of the historic center. The cult of the Madonna delle Grazie has been documented in Ari since the 17th century: the church named after her is already mentioned in a 1671 report of the pastoral visit to the parish. Since the first half of the 19th century, this devotion has been joined by the cult of Santa Filomena, celebrated on the Monday that concludes the festivities.

Three days of celebrations

The festival is traditionally spread over three days: the Saturday vigil, the solemn Sunday, and the Monday dedicated to Santa Filomena. The religious program includes the closing of the novena, Holy Masses, and solemn processions with the statue of the Madonna. Alongside the spiritual dimension, the town comes alive with a secular program: folklore carriage parades, musical shows and concerts in the square, dancing, and traditional evening fireworks in the historic center.

Flavors and folk traditions

The most anticipated moment of the popular festivities is the famous porchetta fair: the aroma of roast pork and the essential arrosticini accompanies the Saturday evening, amidst music and dancing in the town square. Monday, dedicated to Santa Filomena, preserves ancient and evocative rites: the early morning Mass at dawn is accompanied by the singing of pilgrims who arrive on foot from Giuliano Teatino, while young people parade through the village wearing the traditional costume of Ari and carrying copper basins full of grain on their heads. The table on this day showcases the flavors of Abruzzese peasant cuisine: broth with toasted bread, bucatini, chicken, "cancellate" pastries, and mulled wine.

A village to discover

Visiting Ari during the festivities means immersing yourself in the authentic soul of the Chieti hinterland. The town, also known as the "Village of Memory," offers picturesque views and genuine hospitality. The festival of the Madonna delle Grazie and Santa Filomena remains the best opportunity to experience the traditions, faith, and gastronomy of this corner of Abruzzo.
