About Madonna delle Piane

Every year in early September, Miglianico celebrates the Madonna delle Piane Festival, one of the most cherished events in the province of Chieti. Rooted in an ancient legend involving a flood of the Foro River and the discovery of a sacred painting, the festival blends religious processions and celebrations with popular festivities at the small church along the riverbanks. The highlight of the tradition is the unique 'cuccagna', a gastronomic challenge that continues to delight locals and visitors alike, marking the traditional end of summer in Miglianico.

A festival born from the Foro River

The Madonna delle Piane Festival is one of the most deeply rooted events in the life of the Municipality of Miglianico, a hillside village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The celebration takes place at the small church of Madonna delle Piane, nestled in the countryside along the banks of the Foro River, and traces its origins to an ancient story passed down orally and documented in the 1930s by the historian Francesco Verlengia.

According to tradition, in a September during the 18th century, the Foro River overflowed, disastrously flooding the cultivated fields. At the height of the flood, a painting depicting the Virgin Mary appeared, floating on the waters, and gently washed ashore on dry land; from that moment, the waters began to recede. Popular devotion interpreted the event as a divine sign and decided to erect a votive chapel at the site of the discovery, thus giving rise to the cult of the Madonna delle Piane.

September 8th and the Nativity of the Virgin

The festival was set for September 8th, the day the liturgical calendar celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Miglianico, however, the occasion retains a unique local significance, intertwined with the memory of the Foro's flooding. During the Second World War, the original canvas was lost; in the post-war period, the painter Rolando da Ponte created a reproduction, still kept in the rural chapel, before which religious rites are renewed every year.

The tradition of the 'cuccagna'

The element that makes the Miglianico festival unique is the cuccagna. Unlike in most of central and southern Italy, where it refers to climbing a greased pole, in Miglianico, the cuccagna is a fun gastronomic challenge: contestants, with their hands tied behind their backs, must eat a plate of pasta seasoned with spicy chili pepper in the shortest time possible, to the laughter and cheers of the crowd. The term, from the medieval Latin Cocania ("land of plenty"), evokes the very idea of celebration and conviviality.

Program and atmosphere

The festival combines religious and popular dimensions: liturgical celebrations, processions with the image of the Madonna, and moments of prayer and Marian devotion alternate with traditional games, music, food stalls, and evening entertainment. The event ideally closes the long summer season of Miglianico, attracting the faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors interested in religious culture and Abruzzese traditions.
