Marian devotion and popular tradition in Miglianico along the Foro River
The Madonna delle Piane Festival is one of the most deeply rooted events in the life of the Municipality of Miglianico, a hillside village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The celebration takes place at the small church of Madonna delle Piane, nestled in the countryside along the banks of the Foro River, and traces its origins to an ancient story passed down orally and documented in the 1930s by the historian Francesco Verlengia.
According to tradition, in a September during the 18th century, the Foro River overflowed, disastrously flooding the cultivated fields. At the height of the flood, a painting depicting the Virgin Mary appeared, floating on the waters, and gently washed ashore on dry land; from that moment, the waters began to recede. Popular devotion interpreted the event as a divine sign and decided to erect a votive chapel at the site of the discovery, thus giving rise to the cult of the Madonna delle Piane.
The festival was set for September 8th, the day the liturgical calendar celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Miglianico, however, the occasion retains a unique local significance, intertwined with the memory of the Foro's flooding. During the Second World War, the original canvas was lost; in the post-war period, the painter Rolando da Ponte created a reproduction, still kept in the rural chapel, before which religious rites are renewed every year.
The element that makes the Miglianico festival unique is the cuccagna. Unlike in most of central and southern Italy, where it refers to climbing a greased pole, in Miglianico, the cuccagna is a fun gastronomic challenge: contestants, with their hands tied behind their backs, must eat a plate of pasta seasoned with spicy chili pepper in the shortest time possible, to the laughter and cheers of the crowd. The term, from the medieval Latin Cocania ("land of plenty"), evokes the very idea of celebration and conviviality.
The festival combines religious and popular dimensions: liturgical celebrations, processions with the image of the Madonna, and moments of prayer and Marian devotion alternate with traditional games, music, food stalls, and evening entertainment. The event ideally closes the long summer season of Miglianico, attracting the faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors interested in religious culture and Abruzzese traditions.
Situated among the hills that slope down toward the Adriatic Sea, Miglianico is also known for its winemaking tradition and the agricultural landscape of the Foro Valley. For the community, the Madonna delle Piane Festival represents a moment of strong collective identity, capable of passing down from generation to generation a devotion and ritual rooted in centuries of local history.
The 2026 Madonna delle Piane Festival will be held in Miglianico on September 7 and 8, upholding the traditional celebration linked to the Nativity of the Virgin. As every year, the festival will feature liturgical celebrations, the procession with the image of the Madonna, and moments of popular festivity, including the unmissable cuccagna. The official calendar with times, religious appointments, and entertainment program will be released by the Comitato Feste Miglianichesi closer to the dates.
Miglianico is located in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, a short distance from the Adriatic coast. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Pescara Sud-Francavilla or Ortona exit) and provincial roads leading toward the Chieti hinterland. The nearest train stations are in Francavilla al Mare or Pescara, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The festival takes place in early September, coinciding with September 8th, the day of the Nativity of the Virgin.
Participation in the celebrations and events is free and open to everyone.
