The neighborhood and parish festival of San Lorenzo Martire in Vasto
The San Lorenzo Festival is one of the most cherished neighborhood celebrations in Vasto, a historic city on the Adriatic coast in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo overlooking the Costa dei Trabocchi. The event takes place in the area in front of the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, which gives its name to the entire district, and stems from the initiative of the festival committee and the parish community that mobilizes every year to enliven the streets of the neighborhood.
Saint Lawrence, a Roman deacon martyred in the 3rd century, is remembered by the liturgy on August 10th and is among the most beloved saints in Italian popular tradition. The famous night of the shooting stars, which devotion calls "the tears of Saint Lawrence," is linked to his figure. In Vasto, the parish dedicated to him preserves this devotion and transforms it, every September, into a moment of shared celebration that brings together families, the elderly, and the youth of the district. The parish church stands in an area of ancient significance, once crossed by shepherds along the transhumance trails heading towards Puglia.
The heart of the event is the open-air evenings, starting from 8:00 PM, when the area in front of the church transforms into a large community space. The typical program of the Abruzzese neighborhood festival includes:
The festival is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Vasto, one of the busiest in the entire region, which between August and September animates both the historic center and the marina with concerts, food festivals, and traditions. It represents one of the last major popular events of the season, when the city still experiences the atmosphere of the Adriatic summer but begins to rediscover the more intimate and communal dimension of its neighborhoods. For those visiting Abruzzo, it is an opportunity to discover the authentic face of Vasto, far from the tourist flows of the beaches, amidst devotion, good food, and small-town warmth.
The San Lorenzo Festival 2026 returns to the eponymous neighborhood of Vasto, in the province of Chieti, on September 12 and 13, 2026. The two evenings take place in the area in front of the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, opening at 8:00 PM. As per tradition, the festival combines moments of devotion with the popular dimension of the district, with music, food stalls, and entertainment organized by the parish committee. The complete detailed program is published in the days preceding the event.
