A village festival in the heart of Cilento

The Ruscedda Festival takes place in Lupinata, a small rural hamlet in the municipality of Santa Marina, in the province of Salerno, within the southern Cilento region overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. This is the kind of festival born not for mass tourism, but for the local community: for one evening, the village square transforms into a large open-air dining hall, with tables set up by volunteers, the aroma of bread toasting over embers, and the sounds of folk songs echoing through the nearby houses.

The event is traditionally held in mid-August: the official municipal website lists August 12th as the date for the celebration, which is part of Santa Marina's busy summer calendar alongside the Red Eggplant Festival, the Feast of the Assumption, and the Feast of Saint Rocco. It is the time of year when the village population doubles, with locals returning home and vacationers arriving from the coast, making the festival a perfect reunion for those returning to their roots.

What is ruscedda?

Ruscedda is the Cilento version of bruschetta: a slice of rustic, toasted homemade bread topped with extra virgin olive oil produced in the hills around Santa Marina, oregano harvested locally, and the signature cheese of Lupinata, which gives the dish its distinct character. Simple in its preparation, the ruscedda perfectly captures the 'cucina povera' (peasant cuisine) of Cilento, made of bread, oil, aromatic herbs, and small-batch dairy: few ingredients, all local, and all authentic.

According to the organizers, the tasting menu includes:

• Bruschetta with local olive oil and oregano;
• Slices of ruscedda with the hamlet's signature cheese;
• Local wine, served at the tables set up in the square.

Folk music and atmosphere

The culinary experience is never separated from the music. The evening is brought to life by folk music and traditional songs, following a formula that repeats year after year and remains deeply intimate in Lupinata: people eat while standing or sitting at tables, chatting and dancing without the need for massive stages or elaborate sound systems. Visitors from outside the area will find a direct and informal welcome, a far cry from the large-scale summer events on the coast.
