About Saint Menna Festival

Every November 11th, Santomenna, a small village in the Upper Sele Valley in the province of Salerno, gathers around its patron saint, Saint Menna of Egypt, the hermit who gave the town its name. The patronal festival combines solemn mass and a procession through the town streets with moments of conviviality, music, and tastings of typical valley products. It is the most heartfelt event of the year for the locals: an occasion for those living away to return and for visitors to discover the area.

A festival that bears the village's name

In Santomenna, a village of just over three hundred inhabitants perched at an altitude of 540 meters in the Upper Sele Valley, in the province of Salerno, the patronal festival is no ordinary event: the saint being celebrated gave the municipality its very name. Every November 11th, the community gathers in honor of Saint Menna of Egypt, a hermit venerated since ancient times, in a day that weaves together faith, collective memory, and local identity.

Saint Menna, from the Egyptian desert to the Salerno hinterland

Local sources recount that Menna was born in Egypt in the 3rd century, enlisted in the Roman legion at a very young age, and, shaken by the violence of the persecutions, abandoned his weapons to retreat into the desert as a hermit. His cult reached Campania via Byzantine routes, and tradition links the birth of the settlement to a cell built at the highest point of the territory, around which Benedictine monks later built a monastery. The Egyptian martyr is also credited with the link to water springs, a recurring element in his devotion: legend has it that numerous springs inexplicably gushed forth near his burial site. Small terracotta ampoules, to which thaumaturgical and propitiatory powers were attributed, were connected to this same devotion.

From the 9th century, Santomenna appears as an ecclesiastical fief, and in the following centuries, it became the residence of the Archbishops of Conza, serving as the second center of the diocese alongside Sant'Andrea di Conza, with the transfer of the archiepiscopal court and the founding of the seminary. A long history that explains why, even today, November 11th is the date around which the entire village calendar revolves.

How the November 11th celebration unfolds

The heart of the day is religious: solemn mass and the procession with the statue of the patron saint along the streets of the town, accompanied by the participation of the faithful and local confraternities. According to local sources, moments of secular celebration develop around the liturgical events: music, gatherings in the square, and tastings of typical products, in an intimate and familiar format, far removed from large mass-market festivals.

As it is a fixed-date event, the appointment does not change from year to year: those who wish to participate know that the reference is always November 11th, with any collateral initiatives in the days immediately preceding or on the nearest weekend.

A rebuilt village, a preserved memory

The Irpinia earthquake of November 23, 1980, almost entirely destroyed Santomenna. The village was subsequently rebuilt, and the community was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit for the dignity, spirit of sacrifice, and civic commitment demonstrated. In this context, the Saint Menna festival has taken on further value: it is the moment when emigrated locals return and when continuity with the village of the past is publicly reaffirmed.

What to see during the festival

  • Museum of the Sacred — inaugurated in 2009 in the spaces of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, it collects liturgical objects, works saved from the rubble of 1980, and archival materials of the parish and the Confraternity of the Immaculate.
  • Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie — of ancient foundation, with dates in local sources ranging between the 14th and 16th centuries; it is the main surviving historical building of the village.
  • Church of the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception — from the early 18th century.
  • The ancient blacksmith's forge — linked to the popular episode of the miracle of Saint Gerard Majella, still accessible to visitors today.
  • The landscape of the Upper Sele Valley — between the Conza pass and the Eremita-Marzano mountains, with forests, pastures, and springs.

Who is this festival for?

It is an event suitable for those looking for the less touristy Campania: no imposing stages or crowds, but a community festival in an inland village in the province of Salerno, to be experienced along with a walk in the mountains and a food and wine stop in the hinterland. Those arriving from outside will find an authentic and welcoming context, where devotion to the patron saint is still a daily fact and not a performance for visitors.

Saint Menna Festival — edition 2026

On Wednesday, November 11, 2026, Santomenna celebrates its patron saint, Saint Menna of Egypt. The day revolves around the solemn mass and the procession of the saint's statue through the village streets, followed by community festivities. The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released; however, the date is fixed and does not change from year to year, in accordance with the village's liturgical and popular tradition.

The 2026 Patronal Festival

The 2026 edition of the Saint Menna Patronal Festival falls on Wednesday, November 11th, in accordance with the fixed date that the Salerno village has observed for centuries. As every year, the center of the day is the mother church of Santomenna, from which the procession with the patron saint's statue moves along the streets of the town center rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake.

At the moment, a detailed program of the festivities has not yet been published: secular initiatives — music, convivial moments in the square, tastings of typical valley products — are usually announced by the Municipality of Santomenna and the parish in the weeks immediately preceding the event. Those who intend to participate can therefore mark the date on their calendar and check the times closer to the appointment.

The festival remains a precious opportunity to discover the Upper Sele Valley in autumn: the landscape between the Conza pass and the Eremita-Marzano mountains, the Museum of the Sacred set up in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and the hospitality of a community of a few hundred inhabitants that recognizes its deepest identity in the devotion to Saint Menna.
