The debut film festival in Roseto degli Abruzzi
The Roseto Opera Prima Film Festival is one of the longest-running and most renowned film events in Abruzzo. It takes place every year in July in Roseto degli Abruzzi, an elegant seaside town on the Teramo coast, and focuses its attention on a precise and bold theme: debut works, the first films by young Italian directors. For thirty years, the festival has been betting on emerging talents, offering them a showcase and a direct dialogue with the public and critics.
The festival was born in 1996 from an intuition of director Tonino Valerii, a master of Italian cinema with deep ties to Abruzzo, who wanted to create a space capable of showcasing those stepping behind the camera for the first time. Over the years, Roseto Opera Prima has grown into a highly anticipated appointment in the summer calendar of the Municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi, recognized far beyond the borders of the Abruzzo region for the quality of its selection and its ability to spot authors who have since established themselves on the national scene.
The heart of the festival is the competition reserved for debut feature films, which are screened during the main evenings in the presence of the directors and cast. A jury of industry professionals—editors, critics, composers—awards the Roseto Opera Prima Prize, featuring the distinctive sculpture called Rosa Presentosa, inspired by traditional Abruzzese jewelry. The screenings are accompanied by meetings with the authors, book presentations, concerts, and in-depth discussions on cinema.
The evenings are held in the charming Villa Comunale of Roseto degli Abruzzi, a green space in the city center just a few steps from the seafront. The large outdoor screen, seating under the stars, and the proximity to the sea create the typical atmosphere of Adriatic summers, where culture intertwines with vacation. Admission is free, a choice that makes the festival accessible to everyone and strengthens its popular and participatory vocation.
Organized by the Associazione Sulmonacinema APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi, the festival helps make the Teramo town a summer capital of cinema in Abruzzo. With screenings, guests, music, and educational projects like "Cinema in Schools," Roseto Opera Prima combines the promotion of auteur cinema with the cultural growth of the territory.
The Roseto Opera Prima Film Festival celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2026 with a special edition, scheduled from July 15 to 18 in the Villa Comunale of Roseto degli Abruzzi. The artistic direction of the competition is entrusted to Carlo Liberatore.
Three debut works are in the running: Tienimi Presente by Alberto Palmiero (Wednesday 15th), Avemmaria by Fortunato Cerlino (Thursday 16th), and Gioia Mia by Margherita Spampinato (Friday 17th), screened starting at 9:30 PM in the presence of the authors. The winner receives the Roseto Opera Prima Prize, the "Rosa Presentosa" sculpture, during the closing ceremony on Saturday, July 18th.
The opening evening on July 15th is enriched by a concert of film music performed by the Orchestra I Musici Lotariani, while the closing evening on July 18th opens with a live performance by Casadilego, winner of X Factor 2020. Expected guests include Fortunato Cerlino, Barbora Bobulova, Enzo Decaro, and Alberto Palmiero. The jury includes editor Luigi Caggiano, critic Martina Barone, and composer Fabrizio Mancinelli.
The journey to the festival opens on July 10th with the presentation of the book "Cinema in Abruzzo – History and Places" and continues on July 12th with the pre-opening in the square of Casal Thaulero, where Napoli – New York by Gabriele Salvatores will be screened. Admission to all evenings is free.
Roseto degli Abruzzi is served by the railway station on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line and by the Roseto degli Abruzzi motorway exit on the A14. The Villa Comunale is located in the city center, a few minutes from the seafront.
Admission to all evenings is free, with no reservation required.
The festival takes place in July; evening screenings generally begin around 9:30 PM.
