Monteverdi's local cuisine and the spirit of solidarity in the heart of the Upper Maremma
The Roe Deer Festival and Donor Feast is held in Monteverdi Marittimo, a small town in the Province of Pisa located on the southern edge of the Pisan territory, at the foothills of the Colline Metallifere and the gateway to the Upper Maremma. The event weaves together two themes: the gastronomic, showcasing traditional Monteverdi cuisine and roe deer specialties, and the philanthropic, with the Donor Feast, a moment dedicated to celebrating blood donation and the volunteer spirit that has always animated small Tuscan communities.
The festival spans two days. The program includes the opening of the restaurant, where traditional local products and recipes are served, alongside a series of events that bring the afternoons and evenings to life. Live music and dancing accompany the dinners, while Sunday begins with Holy Mass and continues with a demonstration by the local karate school, highlighting the involvement of the village's associations.
The festival takes place in one of the most fascinating villages in inland Tuscany. Monteverdi Marittimo, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, stands at an altitude of approximately 360 meters and boasts an ancient history linked to the Abbey of San Pietro in Palazzuolo, founded in 754 by Benedictine monks. The village serves as the northern gateway to the Maremma and preserves a rural identity defined by forests, game, local produce, and strong community cohesion. The presence of roe deer in the local cuisine reflects this deep bond between the village and its hilly, wooded territory.
The Roe Deer Festival and Donor Feast is designed as a meeting point for local residents and visitors eager to discover an authentic corner of Tuscany, far from the more crowded tourist circuits. Between courses, the festival also serves as a reminder of the importance of blood donation, all within the joyful and participatory atmosphere that is the hallmark of Tuscan village festivals.
The 2026 edition, the first of the event, was held in Monteverdi Marittimo over the weekend of June 13 and 14 with a program full of gastronomic and entertainment appointments.
The program included: Saturday, June 13, the opening of the restaurant at 7:30 PM and, at 9:30 PM, live music with the Orchestra Spettacolo Viola Vivarelli. Sunday, June 14, the day opened at 11:00 AM with Holy Mass, followed by the opening of the restaurant at 12:30 PM, a performance by the Biolab Karate School at 5:30 PM, a new restaurant opening at 7:30 PM, and a dance evening with Alessandro Bucci at 9:30 PM. The star of the table was traditional Monteverdi cuisine with roe deer-based dishes.
The event is held in Monteverdi Marittimo (Postal Code 56040), in the Province of Pisa, within the Tuscan Upper Maremma area.
By car: the village can be reached from the SS1 Aurelia road by exiting towards the interior in the direction of Val di Cecina, or from the Massa Marittima area. The nearest train station is on the coast (Tirrenica line), from which you can continue by car inland.
We recommend checking restaurant hours and availability before setting off. The village also offers scenic viewpoints and nature trails that can be combined with your visit.
