The major ornithological and livestock exhibition of the Valdera, held in the Park of Villa Baciocchi in Capannoli
The National Bird Fair is one of the most deeply rooted and iconic events in the municipality of Capannoli, located in the heart of the Valdera region in the province of Pisa (Tuscany). Now in its sixty-plus editions, it has always been held on the second Sunday of September and represents an unmissable appointment for ornithologists, breeders, hunters, and curious visitors alike. Born in the 1960s as a fair linked to the agricultural and hunting world of the Pisan countryside, it has grown over time to become one of the most complete and qualified livestock exhibitions in the entire region.
The heart of the fair is the evocative Park of Villa Baciocchi, a stunning historic garden that welcomes over 30,000 specimens every year: decoy birds, songbirds, exotic and ornamental varieties, as well as numerous farm animals. From the early hours of the morning, around 7:00 AM, the park comes alive with the famous singing competitions, where entries are judged based on the quality and variety of their song, categorized by species. It is a fascinating spectacle that draws enthusiasts and expert judges from all over Italy.
The event extends along Via Volterrana up to the park, transforming the center of Capannoli into a large exhibition route. Alongside the cages and aviaries, a rich trade fair offers birds, accessories, feed, and breeding equipment. There is no shortage of stands featuring typical Valdera products—wine, extra virgin olive oil, honey, and local gastronomic specialties—alongside displays of vintage cars and motorcycles, artisan stalls, and refreshment areas.
The National Bird Fair is above all a great popular festival, organized by the Municipality of Capannoli with the invaluable contribution of volunteers and entire families who have passed down the passion for this tradition for generations. The day concludes with music and performances in the square that enliven the village until late at night, in a typically Tuscan convivial atmosphere. Admission is free, and the event attracts over ten thousand visitors every year, confirming its status as one of the most important ornithological and livestock events in Italy.
The 2026 National Bird Fair takes place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, the second Sunday of the month, in the Park of Villa Baciocchi and along Via Volterrana in Capannoli (PI). The event opens from the early morning hours, around 7:00 AM, with singing competitions dedicated to various bird species.
Throughout the day, the park hosts the large ornithological trade fair with over 30,000 specimens, an exhibition of farm animals and exotic/ornamental species, stands featuring typical Valdera products (wine, oil, honey), local crafts, and activities for children. In the evening, music and performances liven up the square. Admission is free.
