The chestnut festival in the Casentino village at the foot of the Pratomagno
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Clinging to the slopes of the Pratomagno in the heart of the Casentino, the medieval village of Raggiolo โ a hamlet of the municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany โ dedicates every autumn to the fruit that ensured its survival for centuries: the chestnut. The Castagnatura Festival evokes the long period of harvesting and drying that once defined village life, transforming an ancient necessity into a day of memory, flavors, and community.
In the Casentino mountains, chestnuts were a fundamental food source. The castagnatura was the season of harvesting and drying, lasting about two and a half months starting in October: first the manual harvest, then the busca โ the right to freely collect the fruits left on the ground โ and finally the slow drying in the seccatoi (drying sheds), where the inhabitants would gather for nightly vigils. From these fruits, they made the flour used to prepare polenta and desserts, the staple of their winter diet.
Organized by the Brigata di Raggiolo together with the Municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo and the Casentino EcoMuseum, the event offers a program for all ages:
Among the most cherished moments at sunset is the lighting of the log in the square and the evocative re-enactment of the Time of the vigil in the drying shed, which transports visitors back to the atmosphere of nights long ago, when families gathered by the fire while the chestnuts dried slowly. An authentic festival, far from the main tourist flows, that tells the truest story of the Tuscan mountain identity.
The 2026 edition of the Raggiolo Castagnatura Festival will presumably be held on the last weekend of October, with dates indicated by sources between October 31 and November 2, 2026. However, this information remains provisional and subject to official confirmation by the Brigata di Raggiolo, which organizes the event in collaboration with the Municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo and the Casentino EcoMuseum.
The detailed program โ including times, re-enactments, tastings of baldino and polenta, the market, and children's workshops โ has not yet been released. For final dates and details, please consult the official channels of the Brigata di Raggiolo.
Village of Raggiolo, in the municipality of Ortignano Raggiolo (AR), in the Casentino at the foot of the Pratomagno.
By car from Arezzo, reach the Casentino along the SR71; the village of Raggiolo is a short distance from Ortignano. During the festival, a free shuttle service usually operates between Ortignano and Raggiolo, given the limited parking availability in the historic center.
