The largest Tyrolean Village in Italy, set in Piazza Grande
Every year, from mid-November to the end of December, the city of Arezzo dresses up for the holidays, becoming one of the most beloved Christmas destinations in central Italy. The heart of the event is the iconic Piazza Grande, the spectacular sloping square made famous by cinema and the Saracen Joust, which hosts Italy's largest Tyrolean Village for the occasion. Dozens of wooden chalets fill the air with the scent of mulled wine, gingerbread, and Alpine specialties, managed by exhibitors from the markets of Trento, Merano, Bolzano, and many other European cities.
Over thirty wooden huts make up the Tyrolean market, where you can find handicrafts, Christmas decorations, local products, and gift ideas. Don't miss the Taste Huts, serving South Tyrolean and Tyrolean specialties such as sausages, polenta, dumplings, strudel, pretzels, and craft beers, allowing you to soak up the festive atmosphere in the historic center, surrounded by the medieval and Renaissance palaces of the Municipality of Arezzo.
The monumental Medici Fortress, returned to the city after a major restoration, hosts Santa's House: over 10,000 square meters of magical paths featuring caves, elves, games, workshops, a planetarium, and a meeting with Santa Claus. An attraction designed for families and children, which has helped make Arezzo City of Christmas a major draw for all of Tuscany and beyond.
Every evening, Piazza Grande lights up with the Big Lights Show, a free light and music spectacle that projects stunning video mapping onto the facades of historic buildings. The city also features the Brick House, with dozens of artworks made entirely of Lego bricks, the Forest of Emotions, a Ferris wheel, an ice rink, and carousels, alongside numerous markets scattered throughout the historic center.
Launched in 2016 and growing year after year, Arezzo City of Christmas is now an unmissable appointment on the winter calendar of the province of Arezzo and Tuscany. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each season, combining the tradition of Alpine markets with the charm of one of the region's most beautiful art cities, the birthplace of Piero della Francesca, Giorgio Vasari, and Guido d'Arezzo.
The 2026 edition confirms the formula that made the event famous: over thirty wooden chalets in Piazza Grande, the Taste Huts with Tyrolean specialties, Santa's House at the Medici Fortress, and the nightly Big Lights Show with video mapping on the palace facades. The Brick House with its Lego brick artworks, the Ferris wheel, and family attractions also return.
The Tyrolean Village opens on Saturday, November 14, 2026, and can be visited from Thursday to Sunday from 10 am to 9 pm; from December 18, it is open daily. The event closes on Sunday, December 27, 2026, with reduced hours during the day.
By train: Arezzo station is on the Bologna-Florence-Rome line; the historic center and Piazza Grande are just a few minutes' walk away. By car: A1 motorway, Arezzo exit, then follow signs for the center (interchange parking and perimeter parking areas are recommended). By plane: Florence and Pisa airports, connected to Arezzo by train.
The Tyrolean Village and the Big Lights Show have free admission. Santa's House at the Medici Fortress requires a ticket (around 10 euros, with discounts for residents and free entry for young children). Purchasing tickets online for paid attractions is recommended during weekends and peak periods.
Crowds are high on weekends and holidays: it is best to arrive in the morning or late afternoon to enjoy the evening lights. There are numerous accommodation options in the city and throughout the province of Arezzo.
