Italy's oldest and largest antique fair, held monthly in Piazza Grande
The Arezzo Antique Fair is a permanent, unmissable event for enthusiasts, collectors, curious visitors, and tourists alike. It takes place every first Sunday of the month and the preceding Saturday, twelve times a year, in the monumental heart of Arezzo: the spectacular Piazza Grande (also known as Piazza Vasari), the Logge del Vasari, and along the entire Corso Italia, reaching the area near Parco Il Prato. With nearly 400 exhibitors and around 200,000 visitors annually, it is the largest and oldest antique fair in Italy.
The Fair was established on June 2, 1968, by Ivan Bruschi, an antique dealer and collector from Arezzo, inspired by the famous open-air markets of Portobello Road in London and the Marchรฉ aux puces in Paris. It was the first event of its kind in Italy, and given its extraordinary success, it was decided to make it a monthly tradition. The Fair also played a key role in revitalizing Piazza Grande, which had fallen into decline after the bombings of World War II and the abandonment of the historic fruit and vegetable market. Today, the event is managed by the Municipality of Arezzo and is an integral part of the cultural and economic identity of this Tuscan city.
A rich trail winds through the streets and squares of the center: period furniture, jewelry, watches, rare books and prints, scientific and musical instruments, vintage toys, ceramics, paintings, and every type of collectible. Following internal reforms, the Fair has also opened its stalls to mid-century modern items, vintage goods, and high-quality craftsmanship, broadening its appeal without losing its antique soul. Piazza Sant'Agostino also hosts a market dedicated to hobbyists and artisanal crafts.
Visiting the Fair is the perfect opportunity to discover Arezzo, a jewel of the Province of Arezzo in Tuscany: the Basilica of San Francesco with the frescoes of the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca, the Pieve di Santa Maria, the Cathedral, and the very same Piazza Grande, made famous by the Oscar-winning film Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni. Antiques and artistic heritage blend into a single experience.
