Autumn weeks in the Passeier Valley, blending tradition, local flavors, and hiking
Psairer Herbst (literally "Passeier Autumn") is the major autumn festival spanning the entire Passeier Valley in the autonomous province of Bolzano, South Tyrol. For about a month, between October and early November, the valley's villages transform into a grand stage for the alpine autumn: from the vineyards of Riffian to the high-altitude farmsteads in the municipality of Moos in Passeier and the Hinterpasseier region, the landscape turns vibrant, providing the backdrop for a packed calendar of events.
The festival's motto is "taste, discover, experience." The program ranges from guided hikes to cooking classes, and from tastings of autumn dishes to visits to local farmsteads and historic sites. A major highlight is Törggelen, the ancient South Tyrolean tradition that combines an autumn walk with stops at farmhouses to enjoy roasted chestnuts, krapfen, soups, speck, and new wine. There is no shortage of seasonal local products: chestnuts, apples, wine, cheeses, and rustic culinary specialties.
The municipality of Moos in Passeier and the Hinterpasseier basin are key players in the festival, especially with their mountain-focused activities. Starting from Moos and its hamlets (such as Stuls), hikers can embark on trails toward alpine pastures and side valleys, often paired with culinary experiences like the "Alpin Gourmet" tours, which combine high-altitude trekking with tastings of local dishes at mountain huts.
Psairer Herbst is organized by the Passeiertal Tourism Association (Tourismusverein Passeiertal) and involves the villages of St. Leonhard, St. Martin, Riffian, Kuens, Moos in Passeier, and the Hinterpasseier area. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the South Tyrolean autumn away from the crowds, amidst rural traditions, mountain nature, and authentic flavors.
The 2026 edition of the festival runs from October 10th to November 8th, 2026. The calendar includes "Alpin Gourmet" tours departing from Stuls (municipality of Moos in Passeier) toward high-altitude mountain huts, the Törggelen festival in Riffian featuring roasted chestnuts, krapfen, soups, music, and dancing, the South Tyrolean Goat Festival in St. Leonhard with a farmers' market and traditional crafts, as well as guided e-bike tours through the valley. The full schedule with times, locations, and booking details is available at the Passeier Valley tourist offices and on the official website www.passeiertal.it.
