Prolocando, the festival of the Abruzzese Pro Loco

Prolocando is the major summer festival in San Giovanni Teatino, a town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Established in 2023, the event takes place in the center of Sambuceto, where Piazza San Rocco transforms for a week in August into a gathering point for thousands of visitors. The format is that of a widespread festival built around the network of Pro Loco associations: groups of volunteers who, each with their own stand, bring the flavors and traditions of their towns to the square.

The local Pro Loco as protagonists

The heart of the event lies in the seven Pro Loco associations from Abruzzese towns that collaborate to make the event a success. Recent years have seen the participation of the Pro Loco of Ari, Cepagatti, Città Sant'Angelo, Civitella e Vestea, Montesilvano, Rosciano, Tollo, and San Giovanni Teatino. Each evening, a Pro Loco president takes the stage to share the beauty of their territory, creating a journey that unites the diverse spirits of the Chieti province and the Pescara metropolitan area.

Great Abruzzese cuisine

The gastronomic offering is the true engine of Prolocando: over 50 traditional specialties served at the Pro Loco stands. Among the most beloved dishes are arrosticini, porchetta, fried pizzas, pallotte cacio e ova, pecora alla callara, gnocchi, timballo, caciocavallo impiccato, and traditional desserts. One of the festival's most famous moments is dedicated to arrosticini, cooked on a grill over one hundred meters long set up in the square, which has attracted thousands of people.

Music and entertainment every night

Every evening, starting at 7:30 PM, the event is animated by live concerts and tribute bands dedicated to the greatest names in Italian music. Past editions have featured tributes to Ligabue, Antonello Venditti, Cesare Cremonini, 883, and Max Pezzali, alongside concerts by historic bands and dance nights with orchestras. The music turns Piazza San Rocco into a large open-air arena, with an intergenerational audience filling the center of Sambuceto until late at night.

A project for territorial development

Supported by the municipal administration of San Giovanni Teatino and recognized at the regional level, Prolocando has quickly become a staple of the Abruzzese summer and a model of cooperation between local Pro Loco associations. The event combines food, wine, music, and popular traditions with a clear goal: to promote and showcase the small towns of the hinterland and the coast through celebration and fine dining.
