The gastronomic potato festival in the Sabato Santo district of Vasto
In the heart of the Abruzzo summer, the neighborhood surrounding the Santa Maria del Sabato Santo Church in Vasto, in the province of Chieti, hosts the Potato Festival every mid-August. Born in 2015 as a local parish feast, the event has grown year after year to become one of the most cherished gastronomic appointments of the Vasto summer calendar, attracting families, residents, and the many tourists who flock to the Trabocchi Coast during the Ferragosto period.
At the heart of the festival is the potato, a simple and versatile ingredient of the Abruzzo peasant tradition, featured here in numerous preparations. The signature dish of the festival combines potato gnocchi with lamb sauce, sausage with potatoes, stuffed potatoes, and a side dish, accompanied by water or wine. Surrounding the main menu are local street food stands, offering scrippelle, panzerotti, French fries, porchetta sandwiches, and the famous arrosticini, all prepared by neighborhood volunteers according to recipes passed down through generations.
The Potato Festival is not just a celebration of taste: the evenings are enlivened by live music, shows, and dancing in the square, in an atmosphere of great conviviality that reflects the supportive spirit of the parish community. The event is self-financed and supported by volunteer work, with proceeds going toward the activities of the parish and the neighborhood.
Overlooking the Adriatic, Vasto is one of the most beloved tourist destinations in Abruzzo, with its historic center, the marina, and the nearby Punta Aderci Nature Reserve. The Potato Festival is part of the city's rich summer program, which includes concerts, theatrical performances, and other food and wine festivals, offering visitors an authentic opportunity to discover the local popular cuisine and experience the festive atmosphere of a neighborhood that opens its doors to everyone for two nights.
The 2026 edition of the Potato Festival is scheduled for August 13th and 14th in Vasto, in the area of the Santa Maria del Sabato Santo Church, with stands opening at 8:00 PM. The traditional structure of the festival is confirmed: main dish with potato gnocchi in lamb sauce, sausage with potatoes, and stuffed potatoes, alongside street food stands, music, and dancing in the square. The detailed program for the evenings will be announced by the organizing parish closer to the event.
