Handmade Maremma tortelli in the heart of the Grosseto Maremma
The Poggioferro Tortello Festival is one of the most cherished food and wine events in the Tuscan Maremma. It takes place in the village of Poggioferro, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Scansano, in the Province of Grosseto, and celebrates the signature dish of Maremma peasant cuisine: handmade tortelli.
Organized by the Anspi Santa Croce association with the patronage of the Scansano municipal administration, the festival is held every year in May, spread over two weekends. It is a genuine village celebration where local cooks prepare pasta according to traditional recipes, and the proceeds support local community activities.
The absolute star is, of course, the Maremma tortello, filled with ricotta and spinach and served in two classic versions: with meat sauce or butter and sage. Alongside the tortelli, the menu offers typical local flavors: local cold cuts, sausages and beans, and to finish on a sweet note, strawberries with cream and classic biscuits. Everything is paired with the essential Morellino di Scansano, the DOCG red wine that has made this area of Tuscany famous.
In recent years, the Poggioferro Tortello Festival has distinguished itself as one of the first events in the Maremma to adopt environmental sustainability criteria, with a particular focus on waste reduction and management. A virtuous example of how tradition can go hand in hand with respect for the land.
Beyond the great food, every evening of the festival is enlivened by live music and DJ sets, while Sunday afternoons host local choirs and folk groups. The atmosphere is that of an authentic Maremma village feast: outdoor tables, conviviality, and the warmth of the Poggioferro community welcoming visitors from all over Tuscany.
The 52nd edition of the Poggioferro Tortello Festival was held over the weekends of May 9-10 and 16-17, 2026, at the Centro di Via della Torre in the hamlet of Poggioferro (Scansano, GR). Once again, the menu featured tortelli with sauce and butter and sage, cold cuts, sausages and beans, strawberries with cream, and Morellino di Scansano. The evenings were enlivened by music and DJ sets, confirming the success of one of the longest-running and most beloved festivals in the Maremma.
On the menu: tortelli with sauce and butter and sage, cold cuts, sausages and beans, strawberries with cream, biscuits, and Morellino di Scansano.
The festival is held at the Centro di Poggioferro, on Via della Torre, in a hamlet of the Municipality of Scansano (GR), in the heart of the Grosseto Maremma.
Every year in May, over two consecutive weekends. Lunch service from 12:00 PM and dinner from 7:00 PM.
Poggioferro can be reached by car from Scansano along the provincial roads of the inner Maremma. From Grosseto, it is about 40 km towards the Morellino hills.
