The longest-running food and wine festival in the Tuscan Maremma
The Capalbio Wild Boar Festival is one of the most beloved and long-standing food and wine events in the Tuscan Maremma. Established in the 1960s in the village of Capalbio, in the province of Grosseto, the festival reached its 60th anniversary in 2025 and returns in 2026 for its 61st edition. More than just a village feast, it is a true collective ritual that has spent decades telling the story and soul of a community deeply connected to its land.
The absolute star is the wild boar, the symbolic animal of the Maremma, prepared according to the ancient recipes of Capalbio's hunter-chefs. At the indoor food stand, you can enjoy the great classics of Maremma country cuisine:
The dishes are paired with local zero-mile wines, reflecting the rich winemaking heritage of the Maremma coast.
The festival is about more than just great food. Each year, the program is enriched with art exhibitions—such as the Gastone Franci Prize hosted at Palazzo Collacchioni—musical evenings, nature excursions, and, above all, the evocative performances of the butteri, the traditional Maremma cowboys. The evening equestrian event, titled "Manes under the Castle," brings the village to life with horses, riders, and amazons in a scenic setting at the foot of the Capalbio castle.
The event takes place at the Circolo Cavalcanti di Maremma, just a few hundred meters from the historic center of Capalbio, nestled in Mediterranean greenery. The food stand opens every evening at 7:00 PM, with lunch service available from 12:00 PM on weekends. No reservations are required. Ample parking is available near the village, along with a shuttle service.
For those visiting the Maremma in September, the Capalbio Wild Boar Festival is the perfect opportunity to savor authentic Tuscan land-based cuisine in one of the most charming villages in the province of Grosseto, amidst medieval walls, sea views, and the genuine hospitality of the Maremma people.
From September 9 to 13, 2026, Capalbio celebrates the 61st Wild Boar Festival. The food stand at the Circolo Cavalcanti di Maremma opens every evening at 7:00 PM, with lunch service also available on the weekend (Saturday 12 and Sunday 13).
The menu features the great Maremma classics: wild boar cacciatora, polenta with wild boar sauce, acquacotta, grilled steaks, ammazzafegati, and pork rinds with beans, all paired with local wines.
The program includes the Gastone Franci Prize art exhibition at Palazzo Collacchioni and, on Friday, September 12, the highly anticipated equestrian evening "Manes under the Castle" with butteri and amazons. Ample parking and shuttle service available.
By car: Capalbio can be reached via the SS1 Aurelia road (exit Capalbio/Pescia Fiorentina), in the far south of the Grosseto province, on the border with Lazio. The Circolo Cavalcanti di Maremma is located just a few hundred meters from the historic center.
