About Natale Piansanese

Every year, from early December until Epiphany, Piansano comes alive with the Natale Piansanese: festive lights, nativity scenes, bingo nights, tastings of local Tuscia products, theatrical performances, and the arrival of the Befana. This widespread program, created by the Municipality in collaboration with local associations, transforms this small town in the province of Viterbo into a gathering place for families, children, and visitors from across the upper Tuscia region.

Christmas in a Tuscia village

The Natale Piansanese is the series of Christmas events that the Municipality of Piansano, in the province of Viterbo, hosts every year between December and early January. It is not a single event, but a true widespread calendar that occupies the historic center, the Congress Hall, the parish hall, and the town squares, with nearly daily appointments throughout the holiday period.

Piansano is a village of just under two thousand inhabitants, nestled at an altitude of 417 meters between Lake Bolsena and the Volsini Mountains, in the upper Lazio Tuscia area. The small size of the community is the event's greatest strength: Christmas here is not a packaged tourist product, but the translation into a public celebration of a village social life that happily gathers around a game of bingo, a nativity scene, or a glass of local wine.

Lights, nativity scenes, and tradition

The symbolic opening moment is the lighting of the festive lights, which traditionally takes place on the afternoon of December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception: from that day on, the streets of the center remain illuminated until Epiphany. Alongside the lights, the theme of the nativity scene runs through the entire program, featuring artistic displays, competitions aimed at families and children — such as the famous "nativity in a box" — and the living nativity scene in the historic center, which is usually held on St. Stephen's Day, December 26th, with entry from Piazza Indipendenza.

The taste of Tuscia

The food and wine chapter is a constant of the Natale Piansanese. The guided tasting evenings, often proposed under the title "Wishes under the tree: products of the Tuscia," bring the wines and typical productions of the Viterbo territory to the table, accompanied by sommeliers and local producers. These are joined by social dinners and the inevitable bingo nights with food and wine prizes, which attract dozens of participants of all ages to the Congress Hall every year.

Shows, children, and community

The program dedicates ample space to families and the little ones. Among the events that repeat from edition to edition are:

  • theatrical performances and dialect comedies in the parish hall, generally in the evening;
  • Christmas concerts and traditional carols, curated by the town's musical and choral groups;
  • the anticipation of the letter to Santa Claus and meetings with children in the days leading up to Christmas Eve;
  • the Befana Festival, which ideally closes the holiday period on January 5th with sweets and gifts for the little ones;
  • organized trips to Rome, Florence, or cities with grand Christmas light displays, departing from the town.

Bridging the end of the Christmas program and the heart of winter is the Fire of Saint Anthony, an event on January 17th that is deeply felt in Piansano, extending the communal atmosphere of the holidays by a few days.

A program built together

The Natale Piansanese is born from the joint work of the municipal administration and local associations — cultural, sports, and volunteer groups — as well as the parish. The program is usually published towards the end of November on the Municipality's institutional channels and on the ComunicaCity platform, with the complete poster of events. Most of the initiatives are free to enter; for dinners, tastings, and trips, reservations are required, with modest participation fees.

Why come

For those visiting northern Lazio in winter, Piansano offers a Christmas without crowds and without artifice, just a few kilometers from Lake Bolsena, Montefiascone, and Tuscania. It is an opportunity to discover a Tuscia village far from the beaten path, taste the wines and products of the area, and witness a living nativity scene built by the inhabitants themselves, in a setting of stone houses and narrow alleys that finds its best light on December evenings.
