The traditional fried pizza of Calvi Risorta celebrated in the heart of ancient Cales
Every year at the end of June, Calvi Risorta transforms into the capital of pizzonta, the traditional fried pizza of the Calena area. Set in the San Nicola district, the Pizzonta Festival draws families, young people, and food enthusiasts for three evenings filled with the aroma of freshly fried dough and the lively spirit of a traditional village fair. The event is organized by the Asso Cales Young association with the patronage of the Municipality of Calvi Risorta, in the province of Caserta, Campania.
Pizzonta is a local fried pizza served hot, available in its classic version or in a variety of delicious sweet and savoury toppings. It is the gastronomic heart of the festival: prepared on the spot at the stalls set up for the occasion, it represents a humble, convivial dish deeply rooted in the identity of the Calena territory. Surrounding this specialty are food stalls that provide genuine flavours and local products throughout the evening.
The festival spans three consecutive days, opening in the evening with live music providing the soundtrack. In addition to the food stalls, there are markets, performances, and activities designed for all ages, creating a journey that blends great food with entertainment. A highly anticipated moment is the Cales Award, a civic recognition presented during the event, involving prominent figures from the worlds of culture, sports, and social life.
Calvi Risorta stands on the site of ancient Cales, an important Roman colony in the upper Caserta area, not far from Teano and Capua. The festival is an opportunity to rediscover this village rich in history and to enjoy an evening of conviviality in a territory that weaves together archaeology, popular traditions, and authentic cuisine. Admission is free, with food and drinks available for purchase at the stalls.
Established in 2024, the Pizzonta Festival has quickly become one of the most cherished summer events in Calvi Risorta, successfully highlighting a local specialty and energizing the community. The 2026 edition confirms the winning formula of three free evenings filled with taste, music, and popular celebration.
