The ancient translation of the Byzantine icon between Casaluce and Aversa
The Translation of the Madonna di Casaluce is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted religious traditions in the province of Caserta, Campania. At the heart of the cult is a venerated Byzantine icon—also known as the Madonna Bruna—housed in the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Casaluce, which stands next to the ancient castle in the small town of Casaluce. According to tradition, the sacred image was brought from Palestine by Basilian monks to save it from the devastation of war, eventually finding a home in this corner of the Aversa territory and becoming the destination of intense popular devotion.
The unique aspect of this festival is its itinerant nature: the icon does not remain in one place but makes an annual pilgrimage between two cities. On June 15th, the Madonna leaves the Sanctuary of Casaluce and is taken to Aversa, where it is hosted for about four months. On October 15th, the image makes a solemn return to Casaluce, where it remains for the following eight months. The most evocative moment is the exchange of the canopy at the boundary stone near the Abbey of San Lorenzo: the mantle of the city bidding farewell to the icon is replaced with that of the city welcoming it, a ritual gesture that seals the deep bond between the two communities.
The Peregrinatio takes place around the June departure, a week during which the icon travels through neighborhoods and stops at various parishes to encourage the participation of the faithful. Processions, Eucharistic celebrations, and moments of prayer mark the days, involving entire families and confraternities along the city streets. The message entrusted to the Peregrinatio is to let oneself be guided by the maternal gaze of Mary to become authentic peacemakers in families, parishes, and society.
The Translation of the Madonna di Casaluce is recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the Campania Region and represents one of the most defining moments of Aversa's spirituality. Beyond its strictly religious dimension, the festival is a collective rite that unites faith, history, and popular culture, capable of attracting thousands of people every year and renewing a sense of belonging that spans generations. For the small town of Casaluce, the return of the icon on October 15th is the heart of the devotional year: the Madonna's return to her home, among her people.
The 2026 edition confirms the centuries-old rhythm of devotion: on June 15th, the icon leaves the Sanctuary of Casaluce for Aversa, where it is hosted for about four months, while on October 15th, it returns to its Casaluce home. The Peregrinatio took place around the June departure, a week of processions and celebrations through the neighborhoods and parishes of Aversa, culminating in the final procession to the Santi Filippo e Giacomo parish. The return of the icon to Casaluce, scheduled for October 15th, represents the most anticipated moment for the local community.
On Thursday, October 15th, the icon leaves Aversa and makes a solemn return to the Sanctuary of Casaluce. Around 12:30 PM, the historic exchange of the canopy takes place at the boundary stone near the Abbey of San Lorenzo: the mantle of the city that bids farewell to the image is replaced with that of the community that welcomes it. The detailed program of the October celebrations is announced by the parish in the preceding weeks.
The hub of the festival in Casaluce is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Casaluce (Piazza Castello area), in the municipality of Casaluce (CE). The Peregrinatio processions take place through the streets and parishes of Aversa. Casaluce and Aversa are only a few kilometers apart and are easily connected.
By car, Casaluce can be reached from the A1 Naples–Rome motorway exit and the main roads of the Agro Aversano. By train, the reference station is Aversa, served by the regional line and the Aversa–Naples metro, with bus connections to Casaluce.
Celebrations and processions are free and open to the public. During the processions, temporary traffic closures may be in effect along the routes.
