Christmas markets, street food, tombola and live music in the heart of Mondragone
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
'Natale in Piazza' is the Christmas event that every December transforms Piazza Umberto I, the living room of Mondragone in the province of Caserta, Campania, into a festive hub. Established in 2022 by the Associazione Piazza Umberto I, the initiative blends traditional festivities with popular entertainment: market stalls, the aromas of street food, games, shows, and live music that keeps the square buzzing until late at night.
The heart of the day is the Christmas market: exhibitors, artisans, and producers set up their stands along the square with gift ideas, decorations, handmade creations, and gastronomic specialties. Participation is open to anyone wishing to showcase their products, and it is precisely this local, community-driven dimension that gives the event its character—not an anonymous fair, but a showcase of local businesses and passions. Alongside the stalls, you will find street food stations, which in the Caserta area means high-quality local products—from buffalo mozzarella to traditional holiday sweets—served outdoors under the festive lights.
The program balances moments designed for families with evening events for adults. The afternoon is dedicated to children's entertainment and the now-iconic 'Tombolata Scostumata', a community tombola game with prizes provided by the organizers and local businesses supporting the event. As evening falls, the square changes pace: live concerts take over, featuring bands playing the most danceable hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, with shows that keep the crowds in the square well past dinner time.
The Associazione Piazza Umberto I was founded in Mondragone in 2022 with a clear goal: to protect and promote the local area through cultural and food-and-wine events, bringing life and people back to the historic center. Beyond Christmas, the association has built a calendar over the years that includes neighborhood games, celebrations for the Madonna Incaldana—patron saint of Mondragone—Carnival, and evenings dedicated to traditional dishes like scrippelle. 'Natale in Piazza' has become its most anticipated appointment, growing with each edition to occupy the entire square.
The event effectively opens the long calendar of festivities promoted by the Municipality of Mondragone, which runs throughout December and lasts until Epiphany. In the following weeks, the city features illuminated displays along Viale Regina Margherita, with Santa Claus, elves, street performers, and creative workshops, the lighting of the tree in Piazza San Francesco, white nights along Corso Umberto I, theatrical shows for children, the living nativity scene in the Sant'Angelo district, and year-end concerts. Visitors coming to Mondragone for 'Natale in Piazza' will find a city in celebration well beyond the single day of the event.
Between the sea of the Domitian coast and the slopes of Monte Petrino, Mondragone offers a pleasant stroll through the lights of the center during the holidays: 'Natale in Piazza' is the moment when the whole city gathers together, outdoors, just like in the old days.
At the moment, the Associazione Piazza Umberto I has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 edition of 'Natale in Piazza'. In previous editions, the event took place at the beginning of December, opening the Christmas calendar of the Municipality of Mondragone, occupying Piazza Umberto I with market stalls, street food stands, family entertainment, and evening concerts. It is likely that the formula will remain the same in 2026, but until official confirmations arrive, the dates indicated here are purely indicative. Those wishing to participate as exhibitors can contact the association now; this page will be updated as soon as the program is published.
The event takes place in Piazza Umberto I, in the center of Mondragone (CE), just a few steps from the church of San Francesco and Corso Umberto I. The installations occupy the entire square and the immediately adjacent streets.
By car: Mondragone can be reached via the SS 7 quater Domitiana road, which runs along the coast; from both the north and south, exit the A1 motorway (lower Caserta exits) and continue towards the coast. On event days, the square is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in the city center areas and continue on foot. By train: the reference station is Falciano-Mondragone-Carinola, on the Rome–Naples Tyrrhenian line, connected to the center by bus service.
Admission to the square, the markets, and the shows is free and open to the public. The program usually runs from the early afternoon until late at night, with entertainment and the tombola during the day and live music in the evening. Food at the street food stands and purchases at the market stalls are, of course, paid.
Artisans, hobbyists, and food operators can request a stand by contacting the Associazione Piazza Umberto I directly: phone and WhatsApp +39 377 0992015, e-mail [email protected]. The updated program is published on the association's website and its Facebook and Instagram channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
