Celebrating the native tuber of the Middle Sangro valley, in the heart of the Majella National Park
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, towards the end of August, the small village of Pizzoferrato, perched at over 1200 meters in the province of Chieti, comes alive to celebrate one of its most iconic products: the native red potato of the Middle Sangro. The festival, which reached its third edition in 2025, attracts visitors from all over Abruzzo for a day dedicated to taste, folk traditions, and the discovery of one of the most picturesque mountain landscapes in the Majella National Park.
The Middle Sangro mountain potato, also recognized by the Slow Food movement as a traditional Abruzzo product, is grown on plateaus between 800 and 1400 meters above sea level in the area connecting Pizzoferrato to the neighboring towns of Montenerodomo, Gamberale, and Civitaluparella. The cool climate and high-altitude soil give this tuber a unique quality, appreciated for generations: a round-oval shape, red skin, and firm, flavorful flesh. Historically used in the preparation of bread, polenta, and frascarielli, today the red potato is the star of gnocchi, mashed potatoes, and countless mountain cuisine dishes.
During the festival, stalls set up in the historic center offer the red potato prepared in many different ways: boiled, baked, roasted, fried, pan-seared, or transformed into gnocchi. Alongside the star tuber, you will find typical food and wine products from the Middle and Upper Sangro, from cured meats to mountain cheeses, in a culinary journey that highlights the small family-run productions of the area.
The day is not just about gastronomy: the event features live music, entertainment, games, and sports activities for all ages. Upon request, free guided tours of the village are available, offering a chance to discover the stone alleys, panoramic mountain views, and the famous large rock that overlooks the town of Pizzoferrato.
Located in the Abruzzo Region, within the Municipality of Pizzoferrato and in the heart of the province of Chieti, this event represents much more than a simple festival: it is a way to revive the agricultural identity of a mountain territory and support a crop at risk, preserved by small producers. The Red Potato Festival is now a staple of the Abruzzo summer, capable of combining the pleasure of the table with the rediscovery of an authentic village at the foot of the Majella.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Red Potato Festival has not yet been published by the organizers.
