About San Rocco Civitaluparella

Every year on August 16th and 17th, Civitaluparella celebrates its patron saint, San Rocco, with the most cherished festival in this small village perched in the Monti Lupari mountains, in the province of Chieti. The narrow streets and stairways of the historic center come alive with a solemn procession, the traditional blessing of the bread, live music in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, and the rustic flavors of Abruzzo's culinary heritage. It is a community celebration that draws both emigrants and visitors back to the village in the heart of summer.

The Patronal Feast of Civitaluparella

The San Rocco Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for Civitaluparella, a tiny village of a few hundred inhabitants nestled on a limestone spur on the southern slopes of the Monti Lupari. Located at nearly 900 meters above sea level in the heart of the Apennines in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, the village gathers around its protector every year on August 16th and 17th for a celebration that blends religious devotion, folk traditions, and the joy of coming together in the height of summer.

San Rocco, protector against epidemics

San Rocco has been venerated as the patron saint of Civitaluparella for centuries. Local tradition suggests that the village was originally protected by Saint Paschal Baylon, whose ancient statue, originating from a convent in the Penna Pizzuta district, is still kept in the parish church. The choice of San Rocco as patron saint is linked to one of the terrible plagues that struck inland Abruzzo: the pilgrim saint, invoked as a healer and protector against epidemics, thus became the community's spiritual anchor.

The blessing of the bread

The most iconic moment of the festival is the blessing of the bread, an ancient rite deeply rooted in Abruzzo's peasant culture. Loaves of bread, prepared and brought to the church by the faithful, are blessed in honor of the saint and then shared—a gesture of community and gratitude that reflects the rural mountain civilization. The blessing is accompanied by a solemn procession carrying the statue of San Rocco through the historic center, navigating stairways, alleys, and narrow lanes accessible only on foot, alongside liturgical rites in the parish church.

Music, flavors, and community

Beyond the religious dimension, the festival thrives on moments of conviviality that animate Piazza Guglielmo Marconi and the village. Evenings are marked by live music; recent editions have featured ballroom orchestras and musical ensembles that accompanied dances and popular festivities, as well as refined instrumental performances. Local gastronomy is also a highlight, with events dedicated to rustic flavors and typical products of the Chieti hinterland, where Civitaluparella complements the patronal feast with other traditions such as the Peasant Food Festival.

A village to discover

Visiting Civitaluparella during the San Rocco festival is also an opportunity to discover a village of great charm: the ruins of Castello Caldora, the Church of the Annunziata, the Church of San Pietro Apostolo—housed in an ancient Benedictine abbey—and the nearby Grotta Cese, rich in prehistoric artifacts. Immersed in the silence of the Monti Lupari, the village offers visitors the authenticity of a mountain festival still experienced today as a moment of collective identity.

San Rocco Civitaluparella — edition 2026

The 2026 San Rocco Patronal Feast in Civitaluparella is expected to renew the traditional mid-August appointment, featuring the patron saint's procession, the blessing of the bread, and evenings of music and conviviality in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi. As per tradition, Civitaluparella prepares to celebrate its patron saint San Rocco around August 16th and 17th in 2026. The festival is expected to feature the elements that have always defined it: the procession with the saint's statue through the historic center, the evocative blessing of the bread, and evenings animated by live music and local flavors.
