The lighthearted rivalry between two cities, hosted at the Sagra del Frate in Vicarello
There is a rivalry in Tuscany that needs no introduction: the one between Pisa and Livorno, two cities separated by just twenty kilometers but by an ancient local pride, lived with irony and affection. In Vicarello, a village in the municipality of Collesalvetti in the province of Livorno, this rivalry becomes a show in the vernacular duel "Pisa-Livorno 1-1", an evening where the festival stage transforms into an arena of sonnets, jokes, folk songs, and sketches.
It is not just a show, but a true duel fought with words: the vernacular, that sharp, irreverent, and witty dialect that has produced memorable pages of Tuscan popular tradition over the centuries. On one side the Pisans, on the other the Livornese: each defends their own "bell tower" with rhymes, double entendres, and improvisations, while the audience laughs and keeps score.
The duel is one of the highlights of the Sagra del Frate, the festival that the Pro Loco Vicarello dedicates to the "frate," the famous fried donut rolled in sugar, a sweet symbol of Tuscan gastronomic tradition that smells of home and old-fashioned festivities. Every year, the entire community of Vicarello gathers around the stands and the stage, in an event that combines good food, music, and live entertainment.
On the Pisan side, well-known names of vernacular theater take the field: Lorenzo Gremigni, author of numerous comedies and sonnets in the Pisan dialect and an expert in Tuscan popular theater, joined by Leonardo Ferri and Fabiano Cambule from the Crocchio dei Goliardi Spensierati.
Responding for Livorno are the "cousins" of the Labronian tradition: Aldo Corsi, a historic interpreter of the Livornese vernacular; Franco Bocci, promoter and guardian of the city's popular theater; and Enrico Faggioni, a musician and folk singer who accompanies the challenge with his inseparable guitar.
The vernacular duel is much more than an evening of laughter: it is a way to keep alive one of the most authentic expressions of the culture of Pisa and Livorno, an oral heritage made of irony and plain speaking that risks being lost. Attending "Pisa-Livorno 1-1" means entering the soul of this land, where the rivalry between neighboring cities has always turned into an occasion for celebration and smiles. The evening is free to attend, outdoors, in a warm summer atmosphere typical of coastal Tuscan festivals.
The 2026 edition of the "Pisa-Livorno 1-1" vernacular duel takes place on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 9:30 PM at the Vicarello Festival Area, in the village of Collesalvetti, during the Sagra del Frate.
