The dawn pilgrimage to the Celestinian hermitage and the ancient rite of the sacred waters

The Pilgrimage to San Bartolomeo in Legio is one of the most evocative religious traditions in inland Abruzzo. Every year, on August 25th, the residents of Roccamoriceโa small village in the province of Pescara, perched at about 520 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Maiellaโrenew an ancient rite held at the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio, carved directly into the rock face of the Valle dello Spirito, within the Maiella National Park.
The hermitage, camouflaged among the rocks above the Capo la Vena stream, is linked to the figure of Pietro da Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V, who had it rebuilt around the mid-13th century on even older structures and resided there for a long time. The complex, accessible on foot along a scenic path descending from the Valle Giumentina, is now a destination for hikers and pilgrims and represents a stop on the Celestinian trail that crosses the Maiella.
The heart of the pilgrimage is the ancient rite of the waters. Upon arriving at the hermitage, the faithful stop at the small Sorgente del Catenaccio, considered miraculous, where they wash their hands and drink; many collect this water to bless their vineyards or for healing purposes. The most devout then descend the staircase carved into the rock to the Capo la Vena stream to immerse themselves in the waters, repeating a gesture rooted in millenary pre-Christian water cults.
At the first light of dawn, around 7 AM, the procession departs from the hermitage: the wooden statue of San Bartolomeo is carried on the shoulders of pilgrims, who take turns along the way with songs and prayers, heading towards Roccamorice. Upon reaching the monument to the emigrant, the procession is welcomed by local authorities and women carrying baskets of colorful flowers on their heads. From there, it continues towards the church of San Donato Vescovo e Martire, in the town center, where Holy Mass is celebrated.
Once the celebrations are over, the Saint's statue remains kept in the village's parish church until the first days of September, when a second pilgrimage accompanies it back to the hermitage, closing the devotional cycle. The festival, rooted for centuries in the community of Roccamorice and the Municipality, unites faith, collective memory, and landscape in one of the most spectacular places in Abruzzo, where the wild nature of the Maiella meets the spirituality of its hermitages.
The Pilgrimage to San Bartolomeo in Legio is renewed every year in Roccamorice on the Saint's feast day, traditionally August 25th. The exact dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. According to custom, at dawn, the faithful climb to the hermitage for the water rite, then the wooden statue of San Bartolomeo is carried in procession towards the village, where it remains kept until early September. It is advisable to check dates and times with the Municipality of Roccamorice before attending.
Roccamorice can be reached by car from the Alanno-Scafa (A25) or Chieti-Pescara motorway exits, then following the provincial roads towards the village. The Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio is only accessible on foot along a path (about 20-30 minutes of walking) that descends from the Valle Giumentina.
The pilgrimage begins at dawn: trekking shoes, comfortable clothing, and a flashlight are recommended. The path is suitable for children but has steep sections, and the staircase carved into the rock requires caution. Free admission.
