The Madonna della Croce Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for the hamlet of the same name in Castiglione a Casauria, a small town in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo. Every September 14th, the community of the Madonna della Croce hamlet gathers to honor its patroness, on a date that coincides with the liturgical feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is a moment when the small rural village, nestled along the Pescara Valley, rediscovers its most authentic identity.

Between devotion and village celebration

The celebration weaves together two spirits that have always coexisted in Abruzzo's patronal festivals: the religious and the popular. Castiglione a Casauria and its traditions

Castiglione a Casauria is a fortified village stretching along a ridge north of the Pescara River, famous above all for the nearby Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, a masterpiece of Abruzzo Romanesque architecture founded in 871 and declared a national monument in 1894. In this territory rich in history and tradition, the Madonna della Croce Festival represents one of the many events that mark the summer and the beginning of autumn in Castiglione, a calendar that connects culture, food and wine, and rural memory from the sheep tracks to the squares of the historic center.
