The patronal feast of the medieval village of Roccacaramanico, in the Majella mountains

The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is the patronal celebration of Roccacaramanico, a charming hamlet in the municipality of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella, in the province of Pescara and in the heart of Abruzzo. Perched at an altitude of over 1,100 meters on a rocky spur overlooking the valley, the village is one of the most evocative spots in the Majella National Park: a cluster of stone houses that the slow depopulation of the 20th century had almost erased, and which today thrives thanks to the affection of those connected to it by birth or choice.
The heart of the festival is the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, the village's mother church. Rebuilt in the 15th century and modified several times following the earthquakes that have marked the area, it retains the sober forms of rural Abruzzese architecture, with a simple round-arched portal on its left side. Every year, the community gathers around this building in a celebration that intertwines religious devotion with the collective memory of the village.
The central moment is the Solemn Holy Mass in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie, celebrated on the morning of the feast. In keeping with the ancient customs of Abruzzese patronal festivals, the day is marked by rituals that blend the sacred and the profane: the liturgy, hymns, and, on surrounding days, cultural and social initiatives that enliven the village squares. While the traditional liturgical feast of the Madonna delle Grazie falls on September 8th, coinciding with the Nativity of Mary, the festivities in Roccacaramanico are concentrated in the summer period, when the village is once again populated.
The festival is promoted by the Roccacaramanico Association, which throughout the summer accompanies the religious celebration with a rich calendar of events: musical evenings in Piazza Callarone, screenings at the Ethnographic Museum, and initiatives dedicated to the village's heritage. It is well worth taking the opportunity to discover the small Ethnographic Museum dedicated to rural Abruzzese traditions and to stroll through the paved alleys, the limestone geosites recognized by the Park, and the panoramic views of the Majella.
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the day when an entire village, for a community tied to its roots, beats in unison once again in the heart of the Majella.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Roccacaramanico (Sant'Eufemia a Maiella) has not yet been released. The patronal feast is traditionally linked to the summer period: it is recommended to follow the channels of the Roccacaramanico Association and the Festival Committee to learn about dates and events as soon as they become available.
Roccacaramanico is a hamlet of the municipality of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella (PE). By car, it can be reached from the SS487 road via Caramanico Terme and the Orta Valley; from the A25 motorway, take the Torre de' Passeri or Bussi-Popoli exit, then follow the provincial roads towards the Majella. The final stretch is a mountain road: caution is advised.
The village is located at over 1,100 meters above sea level: even in summer, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a jacket. Parking is limited at the entrance to the village, which is best explored on foot. There are numerous opportunities for hiking and dining in the nearby town of Caramanico Terme.
