The August festival in the Alanno Scalo district, dedicated to the patron saint of Abruzzo
The San Gabriele Festival takes place in Alanno Scalo, a district of the municipality of Alanno in the province of Pescara, which developed after World War II around the railway station on the Rome-Sulmona-Pescara line. It is here, in the village that locals simply call "the Station," that one of the community's most popular festivals is held each summer. It is curated by the Lu Capostazione Association, whose name affectionately references the neighborhood's railway identity.
The festival is dedicated to Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows (born Francesco Possenti, 1838-1862), a young Passionist religious who died at just twenty-four in Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia and was proclaimed the principal patron saint of Abruzzo in 1959. His sanctuary, at the foot of the Gran Sasso, is one of the most frequented pilgrimage sites in Italy, making him the "saint of the youth" par excellence. For Alanno Scalo, dedicating the August festivities to him means participating in a devotion deeply rooted throughout the region.
In keeping with the tradition of Abruzzese village festivals, the celebrations intertwine religious and devotional moments—with liturgical celebrations dedicated to the saint—and civil and convivial moments, featuring evening entertainment, music, and gatherings along the village streets. It is the kind of event that keeps a neighborhood's identity alive and brings together those who have moved away from their hometown over the years.
The San Gabriele festivities are part of the rich Alanno Summer Events program, which animates the area from June to September each year with food festivals, concerts, historical re-enactments, and popular celebrations promoted by the municipality in collaboration with local associations. Held towards the end of August, the Station festival is one of the final major highlights of the season before the Alanno summer draws to a close.
The municipality of Alanno, with about 3,200 inhabitants at an altitude of 304 meters in the Pescara Valley, preserves a historic center of Roman origin and the Oratory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a jewel of Abruzzese Baroque. Those who attend the festival also discover an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, amidst cultivated hills, agricultural traditions, and the hospitality of the small communities in the province of Pescara.
The San Gabriele Festival returns to Alanno Scalo on August 22, 2026, as part of the official 2026 Summer Events calendar of the Municipality of Alanno (June 2 - September 5). The festival is managed by the Lu Capostazione Association, which brings life to the village that grew around the railway station on the Rome-Sulmona-Pescara line.
As per tradition, the day combines the devotional moment dedicated to Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, patron saint of Abruzzo, with a community celebration featuring music and entertainment. The detailed program—including times, celebrations, and evening shows—will be announced on the social media channels of the Municipality of Alanno and the association in the weeks leading up to the event.
