Three days of devotion, brass bands, and entertainment in the heart of the Majella
The Sant'Eustachio Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for Tocco da Casauria, a village of about 2,400 inhabitants in the province of Pescara, set among the hills leading to the Majella National Park. In mid-September, as summer draws to a close, the entire town gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion, popular tradition, and grand public entertainment.
The festival is traditionally spread over three days, each dedicated to a sacred figure particularly dear to the local community:
The processions wind through the historic center, starting from the Church of Saint Eustace the Martyr, which stands next to the Caracciolo Castle. The building, damaged by the 1706 Majella earthquake and later rebuilt in an 18th-century style, preserves the memory of the centuries-old bond between the village and its patron.
Local tradition tells that Saint Eustace appeared miraculously during an ancient battle at Colle Morto: a sudden fog allowed the soldiers of Tocco, who were surrounded by the enemy, to escape to safety. From that extraordinary event, the devotion that still animates the community today was born, renewing itself every year with the Patronal Feast.
Alongside the religious rites, the secular program is carefully curated by a committee composed mainly of young people, with the constant support of the municipal administration. The evenings feature:
The Sant'Eustachio Patronal Feast is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when Tocco da Casauria rediscovers its identity, calls back those who have emigrated, and welcomes visitors in an atmosphere of authentic Abruzzese hospitality. Admission to all events is free, confirming the community and popular spirit that has always characterized this festival in the heart of the Majella.
The 2026 Sant'Eustachio Patronal Feast will be held in Tocco da Casauria from September 19th to 21st, in accordance with the Tocco d'Estate 2026 calendar. As per tradition, the three days will be dedicated to Saint Emidius (September 19), Saint Eustace the Martyr, the town's main patron (September 20), and Mary Most Holy of Graces (September 21).
The program will alternate processions and religious rites in the historic center with a structured secular program featuring brass band concerts, pop orchestras, games, raffles, and a funfair, culminating in a closing evening with a high-profile guest. The full schedule with artist names will be released by the organizing committee in the weeks preceding the event. Admission is free.
Tocco da Casauria can be reached by car via the A25 motorway (Torre de' Passeri-Tocco da Casauria exit), just a few kilometers from the toll booth. By train, the Torre de' Passeri station on the Rome-Pescara line is the closest. The reference airport is Pescara (Abruzzo Airport), about a 45-minute drive away.
Admission to all events is free. The celebrations take place in the historic center, centered around the Church of Saint Eustace the Martyr. For information, you can contact the Municipality of Tocco da Casauria at +39 085 880533 (Largo Menna 2).
