The patronal feast of Cugnoli, blending faith and tradition in the village home to the ancient ambo of Nicodemus
In the heart of the rolling hills of Abruzzo, the municipality of Cugnoli, in the province of Pescara, celebrates its patron saint every year with the Saint Stephen Patronal Feast. The event traditionally falls on August 30th, when the entire village gathers around the figure of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, the community's protector. It is one of the most heartfelt events on the local calendar, drawing not only the residents of Cugnoli but also many emigrants who return to their hometown for the occasion.
The centerpiece of the feast is the procession with the statue of the saint, which winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by clergy, confraternities, and the faithful. The solemn holy mass is celebrated in the parish church of Saint Stephen the Martyr, the religious heart of the village. Alongside the liturgical rites, the program includes traditional civic festivities: a brass band concert, artistic street lighting, food stalls, and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display that lights up the sky over the Nora river valley.
The Patronal Feast is also an opportunity to rediscover one of Abruzzo's most precious art treasures. The Church of Saint Stephen the Martyr, which gives its name to the patron saint, houses the famous ambo of Nicodemus, a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture created in 1166. The ambo comes from the ancient Cistercian abbey of San Pietro, once a powerful monastic center in the region, and was moved to the Cugnoli parish church when the abbey fell into ruin. Inside the church, there are also fine polychrome wooden statues, including the Annunciation group featuring the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary.
Cugnoli is a small village of just over 1,400 inhabitants, nestled in the hills of Pescara halfway between the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella mountains. Its coat of arms, featuring a tower and two crossed keys, recalls its ancient ties to the abbey of San Pietro and the Papal See. Experiencing the Saint Stephen Patronal Feast means immersing yourself in authentic Abruzzese hospitality, amidst genuine flavors, folk songs, and a devotion passed down from generation to generation.
The Saint Stephen Patronal Feast returns to Cugnoli (PE) on August 30, 2026. As per tradition, the day will open with religious celebrations in the parish church of Saint Stephen the Martyr and will culminate in the solemn procession with the statue of the patron saint through the historic center of the Abruzzese village.
The liturgical rites will be accompanied by the usual civic festivities organized by the Comitato Feste Cugnoli. The full program, including times for the mass, the procession, musical performances, and the closing fireworks display, will be announced closer to the event.
